Mare Barrow’s world is divided by blood—those with common, Red blood serve the Silver-blooded elite, who are gifted with superhuman abilities. Mare is a Red, scraping by as a thief in a poor, rural village, until a twist of fate throws her in front of the Silver court. Before the king, princes, and all the nobles, she discovers she has an ability of her own.
Mare Barrow is a Red living with her parents and a younger sister, Gisa. Her three older brothers, Bree, Tramy, and Shade, serve in the front line of a war fought between the northern Kingdom the Lakelands and the Barrows’ homeland, the Kingdom of Norta. Norta is currently ruled by King Tiberias Calore VI, one of many “Silver” citizens, whose silver blood and supernatural powers allow them to rule over the more numerous yet powerless red blooded population. Mare is jealous of Gisa because her skills in sewing earned her a job working for Silvers, and Reds who have jobs don’t have to conscript in the war. When Mare learns that Kilorn Warren, her best friend, will be conscripted, she plans an escape and meets with a colleague who directs her to Farley, a captain of the Scarlet Guard, insurgents composed of Reds who want to bring equality between their people and the Silvers. Farley demands an exorbitant sum of money in exchange for Kilorn’s escape.
Mare’s plan to steal from a Silver with Gisa goes horribly wrong when live news reports that the Scarlet Guard bombed Silver buildings, inciting Silvers around them to grow violent. Gisa’s hand is broken in the chaos, forcing her to quit her job and stop supporting Mare’s family, whilst diminishing Gisa’s dreams of becoming a seamstress. Unable to bear the guilt she feels towards Gisa and her family, Mare goes to a tavern and began stealing from random people to occupy her thoughts. While there, she gets sloppy and is caught while attempting to steal from a boy. Surprisingly, instead of turning her in he gives her money. He informs her that his name is Cal and he works as a servant at the palace. He walks her home and listens as she informs him of her tragic life. He gives her another coin out of pity and leaves. The next day, Mare is taken to the king’s local residence and given a job as a servant. She discovers that Cal is Tiberias Calore VI’s son, Prince Tiberias Calore VII, who granted her her work in the palace in order to protect her from conscription. During the Queenstrial, where Silver nobility compete for Cal’s hand in marriage, Mare accidentally displays electrokinetic powers against Cal’s eventual bride, Evangeline Samos. She is captured, but because the king fears of an uprising should a Red be discovered to have supernatural powers, Mare is made a bride of Tiberias’ second son, the shy Maven, given the name Mareena Titanos, and a cover story: the daughter of a Silver general who died on the battle field and was adopted by the Reds in the war zone. Mare feels torn as she realizes she is in love with Cal, her betrothed’s brother and the future Silver king. However, she soon grows to develop feelings for Maven instead.
Suddenly having to live as a noble within the king’s ranks, Mare slowly acquaints herself with Maven and Cal while also befriending Julian Jacos, Cal’s uncle and a librarian who teaches her how to control her powers. Mare is permitted to say goodbye to her family by Cal and learns the return of her brothers Bree and Tramy, but not Shade, who was beheaded by Silver officers for reported desertion. Furious that her favourite brother was killed, Mare joins the Scarlet Guard. While meeting with Farley to discuss plans, Mare is infuriated when she learns that Kilorn joined, and surprised when she sees that Maven joined as well. This new revelation brings Mare and Maven closer together and they become lovers. The plan involves disrupting a royal ball and killing several important Silvers. However, an unexpected and mysterious bomb goes off, killing many innocents in the process, and also resulting in the capture of Kilorn, Farley, and other members of the Scarlet Guard. Though the rebels are able to be freed thanks to Julian’s help, Mare is alarmed when she learns that Farley was not responsible for the bomb dropped at the palace. The bomb gave Silvers the ability to paint the Scarlet Guard as dangerous murderers to the public. Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard is her debut novel and the 1st book in her Red Queen trilogy. When I read the description of this book I had decided to give it a shot. WOW All I can say is I am so glad I did as I became totally immersed into this fabulous and mesmerizing story by Aveyard. Red Queen is a fantasy style dystopian and if this is Victoria Aveyard’s debut novel I can’t wait to see what else she has in store for us. Once I started this book I could not put it down as it grabs you from the get go and the world building is fantastic. Our heroine is Mare Barrow and she is a Red (red blood) who are considered the lower class citizens in this cruel world. The Reds live in poverty they are the workers the servants and the ones who are sent to war. They have no special ability therefore they are expendable. Mare has no skills she is a thief who goes into town daily and sneakily steals things to provide money and food for the family she loves. Since she has no job she is scheduled when she reaches her next birthday to be sent off to war where few survive. When her friend Kilorn loses his job he is expected to be sent quickly to the war zone and Mare is determined to protect him. While she travels to Silver territory to steal more things to save her friend she meets someone who will change her life forever. The Silvers (silver blood) are the wealthy the leaders the skilled warriors living in luxury with various super amazing powers that rule many of the houses. But there is one Royal family a King Queen and two princes that rule. Mare much to her surprise the day after her trip to Silver territory is visited by Silver warriors and pulled away from home to work as a servant for the Royals. Of course Reds have no choice they must do what they are told to do but at least she doesn’t have to go to fight in the army. An accident changes things for Mare as she is thrown into the world of the Silvers including the Royal family. Out of nowhere she is now a princess and betrothed to the 2nd prince. The Royal family conceives a plan to make Mare a long lost princess and to keep her close. Why? You will need to read this book to find out. Mare has no choice either be this princess or die. We meet the two princes that will become a big part of Mare’s life. Cal is the future King and he is the one who helped her get the job. Maven is the 2nd son and he is the one betrothed to Mare now known as Mareena. Mare likes both of the princes which partially looks like a triangle but in time you will see it is not so. At this time there is a new Red revolution led by the Scarlet Guard. Despite her now being in the upper class Mare hates the Royals and all the Silvers but she has to act the part or die. Queen Elara who is Maven’s mother is very powerful able to read memories of anyone as well as do mind control to force them to do what she wants. In the midst of all of this Mare secretly joins forces with the Scarlet Guard to help them. Their motto ‘We will rise red as the dawn’. Surrounded by the enemy and forced to continue this lie Mare tries to learn all she can especially being thrown into this political intrigue. What follows is an extremely exciting non-stop action and intense battles not to mention facing all these powers that the Silvers have. Mare is warned over and over to trust no oneÖ.Anyone can betray anyone. Mare was a terrific heroine having to face insurmountable odds every step of the way. Cal was hot and I really liked him. Maven was surprisingly very sweet and good with Mare. But the big question will Mare’s secret be revealed? Will she survive? Who will betray her? The last quarter of the book is mind boggling with a major twist one which I kind of expected though not to the degree that it was. There were so many life and death situations with a range of emotions throughout. I do not want to give spoilers and anything more would be spoilers. This was extremely exciting as I could not put the book down holding my breath with every page. In fact the following morning I had to go back and reread the last quarter again. Aveyard has created some amazing and wonderful characters both good and evil. Red Queen is an intense exciting and fantastic read. I cannot wait for the next book in this trilogy. Victoria Aveyard has done a fabulous job writing her first novel and in my opinion she has a wonderful career in front of her.

Red Queen is a gritty, twisted and twisty post-apocalyptic book about a girl not only coming of age, but about a girl finding what is truly important and what makes us who we are. It is a near perfect blend of both these two series if seen through the eyes of Nicolo Machiavelli.
Set the war torn world which has not known peace in centuries. This world is divided between the Reds, and the Silver. The Silvers rule the nearly destroyed world, full of conflict, destroyed areas and radiated wastes. They have abilities, abilities the makes them nearly gods. The lord over the Reds, those who don’t have any abilities and are cursed to live miserable lives serving, laboring or fighting the centuries old war. Mare Barrow, a talented thief, is about to reach the age of conscription to the front with her brothers, but her heart is set on escape. After she bumps into a mysterious stranger, she is swept up into palace intrigue and into an engagement with a prince. Through it all, she just wants to survive, and that may not be possible.
Mare is a stunningly well-balanced character. She is not always good. She is willing to put her family above strangers with little remorse. She balances the needs of her family and friends and the rest of the dystopian world. Often the result is the worst decision possible. Mare iscaught between two princes, two half brothers – Cal and Maven, Silvers whose powers are as bright and as dark as can be.
Mare also carries the job of narration. She is the exact opposite of an unreliable narrator. Nearly everything that comes out of her story-telling is painfully true. The other characters are a tricky bunch, the reader never knows on what sides people stand on. Ms. Aveyard creates an amazingly complex world. So well-drawn that readers may try to figure out what country this plays out in. The world is familiar, even the divisions among the people feel as if they feel out of the nightly news.
The magical system is unique. And Ms. Aveyard feeds it to the readers in drips and drabs, allowing us to firm up the rules and see the chess board. But not everything is as it seems, magic and science seem to work together. Ms. Aveyard is a brilliant writer, maybe too good. I started this book at 1:00 PM on Friday. I just finished at 7:16 AM on Saturday.
This is a book to read and re-read. This is a book to pass on to your friends. This is a book for YA and Adult readers. Buy it – go on, I already have the second book ordered to appear tomorrow. 5 flaming stars out of 5

I’m writing this review after my second read of the book; the first time was a year ago and I wanted to refresh my memory before starting Glass Sword and King’s Cage since a lot of the details naturally got lost over time.This will be a pretty short review, unlike most of my other “first in a series” reviews. While I won’t say that Red Queen is my favorite book/series of all time, I did vastly enjoy it. It’s right up my alley in terms of YA literature, merging fantasy with politics, social issues, and dystopia all wrapped up in glittering jewels.
The only element that was lacking for me was the romance (initially, I thought there would be much more of it, usually when you mix “normal girl becomes a princess and gets involved with princes” the romance subplot is very heavily explored, but the subject is touched upon so lightly that I hardly feel right calling it that. It is there, of course, but just in a whisper, a hint, acknowledged as being present but not given primary focus; though I think we will get better developments as it progresses.). I liked the writing and the development; the book is well paced and feels like a pretty complete book with the first arc finalized, leaving another goal or two introduced in the book to be explored in the next installment. I also liked the characters, though I can’t say I really loved them, since the book’s main focus is not on the characters, but on the overlying “red vs silver” plotline. They were good in that none were really perfect, each ultimately suffering from a major flaw, and each not really falling into your typical tropes (such as being infallible or experiencing insta-love). The twist wasn’t something I expected the first time I read it; in fact, I assumed the direction of the series would be different until that moment.
Now, I know what you’re thinking “this is like an ultra popular book; the author skyrocketed to #1 bestselling teen author on amazon before the sequel was even out, how can it be without flaw???” but it isn’t because no book is and honestly I could sit here and pick it apart and analyze the entrails to make a Fancy Review Full of Smart Critiques but unless someone’s paying me or grading me, the honor student in me would still rather not do that (also, simply because it’s popular doesn’t mean I’m going to try to be harder on it for the sake of things; if I like it and nothing screams “bad!” then I’ve not got much bad stuff to say).
Red Queen was entertaining while still being complex and thought provoking enough to stimulate my 22 year old mind for a few hours. It may not have been the kind of screaming, emotional ride full of romance that I normally would rave about, but it still offered a worthwhile tale of the popular “normal girl discovers she’s extraordinary and becomes the catalyst for change in a world of social ills” idea that we all know by heart now (assuming you read YA lit, of course). I’m looking forward to the next three books. I personally kind of like obsessed villain characters who get super focused on one person, so I’m looking forward to seeing Maven in this role and I’m also looking forward to what becomes of Cal, how the changes in the last 100 pages alter who he is and what he’s going to do. I give it a pretty solid 5 stars, maybe 4.5 if I want to be a little more strict.
