Summary of “The Way of kings” pdf by Brandon Sanderson

According to mythology mankind used to live in The Tranquiline Halls. Heaven. But then the voidbringers assaulted and captured heaven, casting out God and men. Men took root on roshar, the world of storms. And the Voidbringers followed …

They came against man ten thousand times. To help them cope, the Almighty gave men powerful suits of armor and mystical weapons, known as shardblades. Led by ten angelic Heralds and ten orders of knights known as Radiants, mankind finally won.

Or so the legends say. Today, the only remnants of those supposed battles are the Shardblades, the possession of which makes a man nearly invincible on the battlefield. The entire world is at war with itself – and has been for centuries since the radiants turned against mankind. Kings strive to win more shardblades, each secretly wishing to be the one who will finally unite all of mankind under a single throne.

On a world scoured down to the rock by terrifying hurricanes that blow through every few days is a young spearman, forced into the army of a shardbearer, led to war against an enemy he doesn’t understand and doesn’t really want to fight. What happened deep in mankind’s past?

Why did the Radiants turn against mankind, and what happened to the magic they used to wield?

About the Author “The Way of kings” – Brandon Sanderson

Brandon Sanderson says: In November 2020 we saw the release of Rhythm of War—the fourth massive book in the New York Times #1 bestselling Stormlight Archive series that began with The Way of Kings—and Dawnshard (book 3.5), a novella set in the same world that bridges the gaps between the main releases. This series is my love letter to the epic fantasy genre, and it’s the type of story I always dreamed epic fantasy could be.

November 2018 marked the release of Skyward, the first book in a new YA quartet about a girl who dreams of becoming a pilot in a dangerous world under alien attack. The follow-up, Starsight, was released December 2019. Also out that year was the final volume of the Stephen Leeds saga, Legion: Lies of the Beholder, which was also published in an omnibus edition, Legion: The Many Lives of Stephen Leeds, that includes all three volumes.

Most readers have noticed that my adult fantasy novels are in a connected universe, called the Cosmere. This includes The Stormlight Archive, both Mistborn series, Elantris, Warbreaker, and various novellas available on Amazon, including The Emperor’s Soul, which won a Hugo Award in 2013. In November 2016 all of the existing Cosmere short fiction including those novellas was released in one volume called Arcanum Unbounded: The Cosmere Collection. If you’ve read all of my adult fantasy novels and want to see some behind-the-scenes information, that collection is a must-read.

I also have three YA series: The Rithmatist (currently at one book), The Reckoners (a trilogy beginning with Steelheart), and Skyward. For young readers I also have my humorous series Alcatraz vs. the Evil Librarians. Many of my adult readers enjoy all of those books as well, and many of my YA readers enjoy my adult books, usually starting with Mistborn.

Additionally, I have a few other novellas that are more on the thriller/sci-fi side. These include the Legion series, as well as Perfect State and Snapshot. There’s a lot of material to go around!

Good starting places are Mistborn (a.k.a. The Final Empire), Skyward, Steelheart, The Emperor’s Soul, and Alcatraz vs. the Evil Librarians. If you’re already a fan of big fat fantasies, you can jump right into The Way of Kings.

I was also honored to be able to complete the final three volumes of The Wheel of Time, beginning with The Gathering Storm, using Robert Jordan’s notes.

Who is The Cover Artist of The Way of Kings Paperback?

The way of kings which is the first book in the stormlight Archive series has its art cover design by Micheal Whelan who is a professional in the field of design. When Whelan was given the manuscript to come up with the art cover design, in his own words he said: When I received the manuscript from Tor I was somewhat dismayed. 1400 pages! I felt that it would be tough sledding to work my way through such a massive fantasy epic.

As it turned out, though, I was soon hooked and lost in the world Mr. Sanderson so skillfully realized. It helped that the writing had a rich cinematic quality that brought images of scenes, characters and creatures to my mind as if I were immersed in a Myst-style virtual reality adventure, or watching a movie. That was fun to read, but it made my work for the cover art very difficult indeed. How can one successfully distill enough of this novel to possibly do justice to the book with one picture? It was a steep challenge.

Michael did not disappoint. The Way of Kings has all the majesty we’ve come to expect in a Whelan painting and promises an otherworldly adventure full of excitement and consequence.

The Way of Kings Part 1 manages to grip you from the very first page and doesn’t let go, it’s a powerful and somewhat mesmerising start to a very promising series and one which I intend to follow very closely indeed. ― SFBOOK.COM

A sweeping fantasy story set in an original and richly detailed world.
Kaladin used to be a soldier. Now he’s a slave, and after 10 escape attempts, he’s decided he’s resigned to his fate. But he can’t get away from a strangely intelligent windspren—a creature that should be an ephemeral, mindless sprite—who’s been following him for months and is starting to ask tough questions about why he’s given up fighting for what’s right. Shallan has left her sheltered home life to pursue a desperate plan to rescue her family from financial ruin. First, she must persuade the brilliant scholar-princess Jasnah to take her on as a student. From there her task only becomes more difficult. The fates of Kaladin and Shallan and thousands of others hinge on the progress of the war for the Shattered Plains, a war that the great warrior Dalinar Kholin is beginning to doubt is right, thanks to the mysterious visions that visit him whenever a highstorm comes. This tale takes place in an unusual and intricately imagined world populated by enormous crustaceans and multiple colorful civilizations and scoured by the immensely powerful highstorms. The attention to worldbuilding makes this a fantasy fan’s dream, but Sanderson (The Well of Ascension, 2017, etc.) doesn’t neglect his characters, giving each of them a fully realized emotional life and high personal stakes to fight for. The vast scope of this book and the main characters’ compelling journeys make it an epic worthy of the name—and a real treat for fantasy fans–  Kirkus reviews

THE WAY OF KINGS, Book One of the Stormlight Archive, is a fantastic opening entry in a truly epic (in every sense of the word) views series. –Elitistbookreviwes, com

Padraic Brady.  Unmissable, mysterious and world building at its best

I am not a fan of how the Wheel of Time was finished, finding the writing, plot and progression to feel overly simplified and hurried. It’s hard to escape the feeling that the departed Robert Jordan had something much grander (and much longer!) in mind. I’m afraid that completely turned me off Brandon Sanderson completely.
Then I started reading Steelheart and I was hooked. Often noted as a YA novel, that was still quite a great read (the whole trilogy about the Epics is). The moral of the story is not to judge an author entirely based on their, quite possibly involuntary, approach to completing another’s work. If they can write even a short novel like that, I’ve misjudged them.
The Stormlight series is so much better, that I can barely imagine this was the person who so dreadfully completed WOT. It is downright fascinating, raises more questions than answers, and creates such a complex world with memorable characters, locations and a “lost in the mists of times” historical background, that you cannot put it down. I was reading the final chapter at 3am! It’s well written and you will end this book needing a second, a third, just…more. I’ve avoided Brandon’s other works, but The Way of Kings has converted me – it’s an excellent epic read that looks set to be a voyage of discovery into what exactly is Roshan, what are sprens, does anyone know what this world’s “magic” really is? Who or what is Odium? The mind boggles, my brain sparks with possible theories, and I press the Purchase button for Book 2.

Luke. Utterly fantastic, stick with it

Everyone is intimidated by a book that hits over 1000 words like this. But I praise you to stick with it as it is worth every word. I’ve never read a book where I’ve felt so involved with the characters! You root for them and consistently want to get back to their story (referring to the book’s chapter method of switching randomly between character stories).

On top of this, Brandon Sanderson has created a world like no other with creatures, religions, cultures and even the physical lands themselves all being unique and fantastical. I love fantasy but have never read a book where I’ve felt as truly.immersed in a world where I can physically picture it as a movie or TV show!

I would highly recommend this book if you’re a fantasy lover and love to delve into other worlds!

I’m not going to go into the specifics of plot or characters or anything because this book is too dense to really get into it all… just know, I rarely ever get “hooked” on books. My short attention span means that unless the story is really something special, I generally lose interest pretty fast.
I’ve never read a Sanderson book before, never read Wheel of Time or anything. I’ve actually never read a book over 1000 pages before. But, as soon as I got 100+ pages in to “Way of Kings” I was completely and utterly hooked!! I read the entire thing in roughly a month, which is fast for me. I couldn’t put it down.

Sanderson has a way of writing where every chapter has a payoff. You learn something interesting about the world, it’s characters, and story every step of the way and I always want to know more. This world is so carefully thought out, and fascinating in the best ways. The story is incredibly epic, the characters are all very likable in their own ways, and this world feels alive and unique in a way that I haven’t felt about any other Fantasy series in a long time. I’m already quarter of the way into the second book and I can’t wait to find out more about the rich world of Roshar. I might even get started on some of his other book series too (since they all take place in the same universe). Do yourself a favor and give this book a try. I’ve been recommending it to everyone I know. I may have found my new favourite author! Two thumbs way up!

Incredible, impressive or fantastic, all these words are an understatement to the quality this book holds. The Way of Kings is the beginning of a masterpiece series in epic fantasy. It is now my life goal and a new addition to my bucket list to obtain and read the entire series of The Stormlight Archive, which will probably take at least another 20 years from now to complete.
Before you started reading this book, let me do you a favor. Go outside your home, look at the sky, the stars, clouds, the moon or if you’re brave enough, the sun. Done? Good, raise your expectation of this series that high. My expectation for this book was probably higher than that and it still managed to blow me away. I’m pretty sure the title The Way of Kingsis a hidden message by Sanderson for his reader, telling us that this is his first step in his way of becoming one of the kings in the genre.
Obviously, I can’t tell you anything about the story but I’ll tell you this, The Way of Kings is the beginning of tales that will remain inside your mind palace. It’s a heavily character driven book filled with tales of life & death, love & hate, bravery & cowardice, hope & despair, trust & betrayal, faith & atheism. Basically, all elements required for a great story are here, told from multiple POV.

WOW. Ok, so I actually cried during this book (it was a stressful day, but I’m usually not a weeper). This book captures the epic grandiosity and scope that I remember as a kid reading Eddings and Feist and Jordan. I didn’t know what was going on all the time, but I was keenly aware of the great plot, the secrets, and the depth of world building and character in this book.
Yes, it’s REALLY long, and yes, it lags a bit from time to time under all the philosophy, but honestly I was just staggered by the scope of what this book is, and what the rest of this series has the potential to me. I’ve read most of Sanderson’s books (save the Wheel of Time which NEED TO BE READ) but he has really outdone himself with this. BIG FAN TO SAY THE LEAST! If you like big epic fantasy you have to read this.
