How did Colleen Hoover ever think up this dark and twisted tale? It is so unique, so completely shocking that it blows away every other suspense story I’ve ever read.
Lowen is a struggling writer when she gets an offer too good to pass up. Jeremy, the husband of successful author Verity Crawford, hires Lowen to complete Verity’s series when his injured wife is unable to do so. Once Lowen arrives at their home to start compiling notes and do research, she discovers an unfinished manuscript that looks to be Verity’s autobiography. What is written in those pages will horrify and haunt anyone who reads it.
So many books advertise as suspenseful thrillers, but hardly any of them cause my heart to blip even a little. (I know, I’m a stone cold reader.) But this book! There is such a deliciously creepy atmosphere that permeates throughout and it got me good. I’ll admit to heart palpitations, cold clammy hands, and being startled at the smallest noises. And as the story progresses and we find out more and more, the tension ratchets up to almost unbearable levels.
There was never any hope for me. I was hooked from the very first page. There is creativity to this story that makes it hard to look away. I’ve never read anything like this, not even close. As a result, every page was a surprise and I just wanted to keep going. And as the truth gets darker and more tortuous, I had no choice but to hold on for the ride of my life.
This book employs one of my favorite formats, a story within a story. I’ve loved pretty much every book I’ve come across that uses this format, and it works especially well here. The interspersing of the inner manuscript with the outer story allows us to find out what’s going on at the same time that Lowen is figuring things out. I cannot believe this is Colleen Hoover’s first thriller. Reading this feels like watching a master at their craft, setting the bar higher than I ever thought possible. This story is so astonishing and unsettling and completely original. It will stay with me for a long time.

Me, rollerblading into my therapist’s office with heart-shaped sunglasses and a piña colada and dropping this book on the desk with a resounding thud: Boy do we have much to talk about today!
Why read Verity when you can just pull out a Ouija board and summon a demon? I’m sure it’ll have the same effect. I finished this book feeling completely sapped of life, as if I’ve been bleeding freely for the past few hours instead of simply reading. I wish I could just shake my head to dissolve the memory of that ending, to disarrange it somehow. My mind is still at war with itself, because, of all the things I’d braced myself for, that was not it.
So, what’s this book about?
Lowen Ashleigh is set free from the long tedium of her daily life when she’s employed by Jeremy Crawford to ghostwrite the remaining books in a popular series his wife, Verity, is unable to finish due to an unfortunate accident. Lowe acquiesces in the spirit of hope: that this opportunity would help her acquire some small measure of celebrity that would be pure oxygen to the fire of her career. But nothing prepares Lowe for the purity of dread that clamps down her like a vise when she stumbles upon Verity’s autobiography. Verity’s secrets soon take up so much space in the house that there is barely any room left for Lowe’s body. Now she has to force what she’s reading into what she knew of Verity, Jeremy, and their lives together. She has to weave it in among what she expected. Sooner or later, the whole truth would spill, and this fraught waiting would come to an end—with havoc, and screaming, and loss.
“After all, this is a house full of Chronics. The next tragedy is already long overdue.”
I relish books that make me backtrack my own declarations of preference, the ones that catch me completely off-guard, astonish me, keep me on my toes. Verity is not at all what I expected, and I think it is all the better for it. I’d gone on in mystery, but not without speculation and a vast deal of skepticism. I made the mistake of perceiving this book through the haze of my opinions on Hoover’s early books, and it didn’t look quite like I remembered. I’ve never been happier to be so astronomically wrong, because this book absolutely lives up to the buzz.
Verity is a fiendishly clever, mind-bending whirligig of a book. It’s a hall of mirrors where everything is a vacant reflection, including the people who live there. Hoover lures and tricks and sets obstacles to drive you into her toils. She wields her unreliable characters to stunning effect, confounding, disturbing and delighting in turn, and draws you into a world where illusion informs reality and time enfolds hauntingly. Not only is nothing what it seems, it’s not even what it seems after it’s been revealed to be not what it seems. I was entrapped in this story long before I even realized that the net has been cast.
I love how wild the energy was in this book, barely controllable yet perfectly controlled. Hoover drapes Lowe’s unease and confusion over the reader by keeping us in the same disconcerting darkness. Danger pulses all around. Every page is very thin ice to skate on. You can scarcely see the freshly hideous future taking shape ahead of you, yet you can feel it all the same. I have a quirk of prudence in me that’s hard to break and if I were Lowe, I’d have gotten the hell out of that place. I couldn’t fathom how her fear couldn’t properly kindle. I’d have been impressed if I weren’t too distressed and I’d have appreciated her courage if I weren’t too preoccupied repeating a litany of “GET OUT OF THERE” in my head.
And, oh my God; the ending! It struck me backhanded. Verity offers you no solidity of truth that you could hold in your hands. Even as I was reading the last chapter, I was mining it for clues, trying to make sense of something so innately senseless. Everything I’ve read up until that point felt like a false memory, and I was left shaking my fist at the whole book for leaving me on such a hideous note as it did.
In conclusion, stories like Verity, are the reason I’m going to be one of those parents in their forties that make their kids go to sleep at 6 pm so they can drink scotch in the bath and have an existential crisis about that book they read back in 2018!

Who is Hoover?

I don’t even really know where to start with this one. I will say this. Any author that can branch out from her normal genre of romance and write something like this and make it work, well not only make it work but make it one of her best written novels, says tremendous things about them. This book says so much about Hoover’s talent and brilliance as a writer. Cue all the new readers! Guys, I won’t lie. I got truly creeped out at times with this one. The way this book was written truly brought out a side of Hoover I never thought possible. I don’t know how many times I asked myself if she was possessed while writing this one.
The POV of this book was interesting. I thought going in you would see things from Verity’s POV but like most of this book my theory was thrown out the window as soon as I started. But it worked. It was beyond fascinating seeing Verity from the POV we did and written any other way I don’t think this book would have been what it is and that would have been disappointing.
Throw all your theories out the window right now. At times some things were predictable but the plot twists and that ending came out of nowhere and in such a delectable way. Just sit back and be prepared for your heart to race and your mind to run with possibilities. Bravo Hoover. I only hope we get to see more of this side of you in the future.
I’ve been looking for a book that will me loose sleep

I’ve always loved to read, but since getting married and growing a family and life just being life, that was a hobby that took the back burner for a long time. I’ve been longing to get back into my groove with a good nail-biter story, and Verity delivered. I started on page one aftery girls were down for bed for the night and before I knew it, 5 hours had gone by and I had never stopped turning the pages. My husband even had to remind me to come to bed to sleep and I still finished it the very next day. Each sentence left me questioning and longing for more. Some situations left my stomach churning. Other situations left my jaw hanging open in disbelief. If you’re a thriller/mystery fan like me, I HIGHLY recommend this book. It was a wild ride that left me gripping the arm rests of the chair and feeling like I was hungover the next couple days after finishing it. This was definitely the book I needed to respark my love for reading! 10/10
Absolutely phenomenal, left me speechless

TRIGGER WARNINGS Book for mature audience 18+, topics mentioned: death of child, death of a parent, attempted abortion.
This book was totally different compared to other books Colleen Hoover has written. From the opening of this book, I was immediately filled with questions, intrigue, fascinations, and more. You definitely won’t be disappointed or get bored because first, anything Colleen writes is amazing and second, Colleen’s stories are filled with unique plot lines and characters you’ll want to know more about.
This story followed, Lowen, a writer living in New York, who hadn’t had much success with her books, but one day she received the opportunity of a lifetime… the chance to help finish writing a series of books of the famous author, Verity Crawford. Lowen was initially hesitant to accept the chance, but through talking with Verity’s husband, Jeremy, she accepted.
The moment that Lowen started researching and trying to figure out Verity’s mindset in order to finish the books was when things started to unravel. For instance, once Lowen discovered the autobiography that Verity had been working on before her accident, that revealed both intimate details about Verity and Jeremy’s lives, as well as some very disturbing dark thoughts. This book genuinely had me shocked with the twists that were uncovered in the story, other times I was genuinely disturbed by what I read that I needed to take breaks in between.
This book was written in Lowen’s point of view, and Verity’s, through her autobiography, we get to see her life before her accident as well as get a better understanding as to the type of person Verity was. Verity’s chapters left me feeling shocked partially due to her inner thoughts being somewhat disturbing and… a bit to take in. You’ll understand when you read the book. There was a line that Lowen said, “…maybe because she was a villain…” Verity was a character with layers that when peeled back, revealed both the true and horror lying beneath the shadows. The whole time while reading, I felt like I was in deep with Lowen uncovering all these secrets, and shocking revelations.
To anyone interested in reading this book, I highly recommend you check the trigger warnings on this book due to the story mentioning some heavy, dark topics that may be unsuitable for a younger audience, and some people may not feel comfortable reading about it. That being said, I went into this book with an open mind and not really having an idea as to what exactly the plot was. If you decide to read this book, it’s best to go in with open minded and to mentally prepare yourself. This book was my first time reading a thriller. Most books I’ve read have ranged from romance to fantasy and other genres, but never had I read a book like this before.
I don’t know how Colleen did it, but she absolutely gave me the creeps ( in a good spooky way) while reading this story. Definitely not for the faint hearted, but one I would recommend you read. This book was absolutely amazing, and by the time the book was nearing the end, the climax and ending were phenomenal! I was in utter shock with the twists and turns! My jaw dropping and constantly gasping from the shocking revelations! From the opening chapter to the very last sentence in the book, you’ll be left with so many questions and a lingering book hangover.
