Desperation In Death Summary
New York, 2061: The place called the Pleasure Academy is a living nightmare where abducted girls are trapped, trained for a life of abject service while their souls are slowly but surely destroyed. Dorian, a thirteen-year-old runaway who’d been imprisoned there, might never have made it out if not for her fellow inmate Mina, who’d hatched the escape plan. Mina was the more daring of the two―but they’d been equally desperate. Unfortunately, they didn’t get away fast enough. Now Dorian is injured, terrified, and wandering the streets of New York, and Mina lies dead near the waterfront while Lt. Eve Dallas looks over the scene.
Mina’s expensive, elegant clothes and beauty products convince Dallas that she was being groomed, literally and figuratively, for sex trafficking―and that whoever is investing in this high-overhead operation expects windfall profits. Her billionaire husband, Roarke, may be able to help, considering his ties to the city’s ultra-rich. But Roarke is also worried about the effect this case is having on Dallas, as it brings a rage to the surface she can barely control. No matter what, she must keep her head clear–because above all, she is desperate for justice and to take down those who prey on and torment the innocent.

Books don’t come better than ones written by Nora Roberts/JD Robb. This is no exception.
I would add, if you aren’t a fan yet of the ‘In Death’ books, much of the in-house jokes and the relationships among the characters will be lost on you. While it IS a stand-alone, as are all 50+ books in this series, the characters learn, grow, and add as the series goes on, so it’s best to see where they all started and how they all fit in the big picture rather than in just a snapshot.
This book deals with human trafficking, especially with young girls, so that could be a major trigger for some. This is clearly given in the description, so there’s no need for a ‘warning’. It was disturbing to read about, but even worse to know this is based on real-life events happening all over the world, and a scary practice that should be eliminated. It’s too bad we don’t have dozens of Eve Dallases and her team!
As with the previous book, I love seeing the characters grow and change, and it was epic to see ‘Mama Bear’ fierce Mavis in action! It was also good to see that although Eve and Mavis, bff for a long while, disagreed, they could agree to disagree and still be fiercely and utterly loyal to each other, themselves, and those who trusted them.
We’re getting a mega cast of characters, and seeing some who have been standing in the background through the season come forward is a nice change and spotlight. Adding new ones is also great, though I need a description added as to who is who and how they fit!
Also revealed near the end are the villains, and the takedown is in true Eve Dallas style. A must read for all In Death fans and a great mystery for ones just discovering the series.
5.0 out of 5 stars my favorite series just gets better and better

I picked up Naked in Death when it first came out, back when we didn’t know JD Robb was my favorite author Nora Roberts. I loved that book and that world she created. The series has only improved and each book gives me a chance to visit the NYC of the future and solve a gruesome crime while also following Dallas and Roarke and her increasing circle of friends and colleagues. This may be one of my favorites in the series—a bit oddly since reading about this sick, psychopathic, and highly organized level of human trafficking was not an east read. But once again her bringing in her team, old FBI friends, Mira, Nadine, and even Mavis as important to the solving of this crime was great because so many of the characters got their moment to shine. my favorite part of this series is that relationships evolve and get richer. Think back to Roarke as a suspect and Eve as a cop with issues. Think of them now as a married couple and how they have both grown, changed, and support each other. But then there was the introduction of Peabody, Mavis, Nadine, Louise ( missing in this one) and how her relationships with them have evolved and how they and their significant others have entered Dallas’ sphere and impact her. Then there is the interaction with Roarke’s major domo and surrogate father Somerset and Roarke’s Irish family. while the Irish family was MIA, some lovely quiet impactful moments passed between Somerset and Eve.
I’ll just say there are some long series I have read that fall into two categories. the first is when each new book is a romance about a new couple and maybe old characters make an appearance. The other is that the series main character just is recycled doing the same things over and over surrounded by a never changing, never evolving cast of characters. Some may be comforted by visiting static characters who never learn anything— I am not one of them and appreciate the ever evolving and growing of Dallas, Roarke, and their ever expanding group of friends. And other than Jamie Fraser, is there any more amazing male lead character than Roarke!?
5.0 out of 5 stars The BEST one yet!

Just when you think J D Robb could not possibly write a better story from her “In Death” series, “Desperation in Death” came along. There is no greater fear for a responsible parent over the disappearance of a their child. IF you never read any other book, you truly need to read this one. It is very difficult for me to write this review and I have never married nor had any children of my own. It happens that I do love children and get along with them better than most of their parents with exceptions of course. My point is that Eve Dallas the main character of these stories is someone I would want on my side in ANY situation. Her supporting characters, Rourke, Peabody, Mavis, and a score of others too many to mention also make these books vibrate with life, loyalty, determination to do what is right, and to stand by the fallen with true justice. The fallen as I just mentioned are not the only ones, these courageous characters help. Can you imagine a school where the child who usually has NO ONE else protecting them is able to learn anything (within reason, of course) their heart’s desire and an environment of safety and comradeship? Read this book and learn about the possibility of such things. Weep from the injustice of our society and RAGE against the scum who would destroy that justice for the sake of their bank accounts. Folks, I cannot recommend this book or any book the either Nora Roberts or J D Robb has ever written, highly enough! This book though, needs to be read by as many people possible. It is THAT good!
