Mayne writes with imagination, curiosity. His characters are well-limned, with options for expansion, freshness and believability.
In a way, each of his I’ve read thus far take the magic of a problem and explain it…without destroying the wonder. Theo’s thought process is a decent guide to instruct how scientific advance has a corollary with the design of magic: to provide the necessary prior info as the basis for his resolution, all the while doing so as a teacher (as it were) who wants others to engage with the fire of wonder, curiosity and purpose.

Overall I enjoyed this book. The first part was pretty slow because it got really bogged down with the science. I’m not a big sci-fi reader but I have read some Andy Weir books and somehow Andy manages to keep the science-heavy parts understandable and still very enjoyable.
But back to this book, what kept it readable were the sections featuring Jessica. I’ve read the Jessica Blackwood series twice and wish we could get more of them.
But overall it was a pretty good book. The plot was interesting if a bit too far-fetched in places.

This was my favorite Theo Cray and Jessica Blackwood book. I have read all of the previous Cray and Blackwood single novels and enjoyed them all immensely. Have reread them all, which is rare for me. Read the previous duo novel. In the current one the duo have continued to grow and become more synergistic as a team. This story is technically tight, and plausible. Enjoy.
