The Goodbye Year Summary
Melanie, a perfectionist mom who views the approaching end of parenting as a type of death, can t believe she has only one more year to live vicariously through her slacker senior son, Dane. Gorgeous mom Sarah has just begun to realize that her only daughter, Ashley, has been serving as a stand-in for her traveling husband, and the thought of her daughter leaving for college is cracking the carefully cultivated facade of her life. Will and his wife are fine as long as he follows the instructions on the family calendar and is sure to keep secret his whole other life with Lauren, the woman he turns to for fun (and who also happens to have a daughter in the senior class).
Told from the points of view of both the parents and the kids, The Goodbye Year explores high school peer pressure, what it s like for young people to face the unknown of life after high school, and how a transition that should be the beginning of a couple s second act together empty nesting is often actually the end.”

I put off reading this book because I’ve been going through multiple goodbye years with my own children, but I wish I had not waited! The Goodbye Year was bittersweet and engaging. As a mom, I was deeply touched by both the struggles and the joys experienced by the women in this novel. It’s obvious to me as a reader that author Kaira Rouda knows what she’s talking about when it comes to being a mom and having to help your kids fly the nest.
Besides being a heartfelt story that reflects the emotions of a goodbye year, the book was extremely entertaining. Rouda delves into the lives of the economically elite and reveals struggles and atrocities that shock and entertain, and yet as she peels back the layers of each character, we discover women whose motivations are more relatable to every woman than we initially might believe. I would recommend this novel to any woman who has ever questioned her role in life.

As I turned the last page on this very entertaining look at Senior Year from the student and parent perspective, I breathed a huge sigh of relief that I hadn’t experience quite that level of drama, thank heavens!
This was quite the the little “Peyton Place” full of angst and so much misbehavior and was so much fun to read about. But there was also some truth to the melancholy and sadness that saying goodbye to certain stages in life bring. And that was beautifully portrayed here. I truly enjoyed this book. It was a quick read but full of emotion and truth and I absolutely recommend it.

Kaira Rouda is my favorite contemporary author and The Goodbye Year is her best book yet. The characters are compelling – flawed and relatable – and the story that centers around a middle-aged couple facing the challenges of their underachieving son’s senior year and their own future facing the dreaded “empty nest” is both touching and universal in its appeal. Rouda intertwines the struggles that Melanie and her family face with those of her neighbors, all privileged and leading seemingly perfect lives on the surface. The reality behind the facade is revealed as lives unravel. The glamorous setting and high profile social life of the multi-viewed tale makes The Goodbye Year a captivating read from start to finish. I thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommend.
