The book held my attention far more than the recent modern day thrillers I’ve tried, but mainly because the narrator, Paul Strom, comes across as one of those boorish louts at a cocktail party who won’t shut up about his new sports car and you are alternately exasperated and fascinated by his blather. The author fails to give Strom the devilish coolness of a Tom Ripley nor the psychotic verve of Bruno Antony. He’s up to all kinds of shenanigans, but it’s unclear how he gets away with any of it, as his “malignant narcissism” (helpfully diagnosed in a long speech by a neighbor) is more clumsily delusional than smoothly dangerous. He is constantly addressing the reader with asides such as “Don’t you agree?” which is good for a few chuckles. Wife Mia, ostensibly targeted as much for her gullibility and youth as her wealth and beauty, never seems under his thumb enough to give a sense of peril.
The author does a fine job of slowly unfurling Paul’s character and devious plans over the course of a ride to the couple’s lake house, where he is to treat his wife to the “best day ever” (repetition seems to be a part of the narcissistic makeup, at least in this case, as Paul obsessively repeats the line like a mantra, despite the day being anything but as soon as it starts). There are some plot holes and emotional inconsistencies (why, for instance, would Mia and the neighbor, both of whom have Paul’s number at this point, confront him alone, in a dark, lonely cabin out in the middle of nowhere? Why doesn’t Mia ever report Paul to the police and just leave him to go on to his next victim?), but the story, written in a plain, fast-paced Paula Hawkins style, maintains its grip on the reader thanks to Paul’s darkly engaging personality. While it’s doubtful Paul will go down as one of the more memorable villains of fiction, his over-the-top musings are enough to keep you turning the pages.

This has got to be best psychological thriller I have read yet, and I am not sure how I am going to do this book justice with my review without spoiling it.
This was sinister and creepy from the get go, Paul Strom has to be one of the most creepiest characters I have read in a long time, clearly a Sociopath who shows little emotion other than what he wants to show – he doesn’t get called Poker Face Paul for no reason!
Best Day Ever is set over a 24 hour period, Paul and his wife Mia are heading to their cottage for the weekend, just the two of them, child free. Mia has been sick for a while now and he sees this a perfect opportunity for her to recoup and relax, though it is clear from the get go that something is going to go down over the weekend but you really are left guessing as to what Paul has in store for him and his wife.
Paul is one of those characters that you are supposed to hate but he hooked me right in that even I was beginning to believe his justification for some of his actions! He is a man who likes to be in control of everything so when his wife starts to act “unusual” in his eyes, over the course of the weekend the mask he has held in place for so many years begins to slip and the whole story begins to unfold.
This story was expertly written and the tension twists and turns really had me on the edge of my seat, I devoured this book and this is far different from Ms Rouds other works, it is clear that she can wear the hat of writing different genres brilliantly!

It’s certainly not a bad read for 99p – the author does have a very fluent writing style and she has created a ideal villain we love to hate in her unreliable protagonist Paul. It certainly kept me gripped the whole way through but I started to find it a little too predictable – we’ve seen this character before both in fiction and real life and all the other characters are one-dimensional and the events a bit generic. Also the ending is rather a damp squib – I was expecting some sort of final twist that would rock me back on my heels, instead it ends with a rather limp epilogue. Still very good value for 99p and would make an entertaining holiday read.
