They are going to be rich beyond their wildest imagination. All they have to do is attend to a few insignificant details. It isn’t as if they plan on opening Pandora’s Box, allowing the three Furies from Greek antiquity, “Alecto, Megaera, and Tisiphone,” to escape, whom you wouldn’t want unleashed upon your worst enemy.
Her booming “Ticket to Ride” IPO concept causes me to reflect on carnivals, amusement parks, and, ironically, the once burgeoning airline industry. Speaking allegorically– if you don’t mind a far-fetched analogy, I’m reminded of three companies, inspired by an excellent, contemporary novel, “The Next Wife,” written by Kaira Rouda and published in 2021. Let’s fictionalize them, and combine the subsidiaries “Chalks, PanAm, and Eastern” into one big, happy family.
Chalks was once the world’s oldest airline. A smaller company, with shorter routes and highly specialized aircraft, its fleet is comprised of seaplanes. The propeller-driven aircraft, fly to lush island destinations in the Caribbean. They land on the water, and float on pontoons. They company owns several planes, but not too many. They don’t fly great distances, but they carry passengers on vacation to the nearby tropical islands. You are probably thinking about Paradise and the “Fantasy Island” folks.
In contrast, PanAm has numerous, much larger, jet aircraft in its fleet. They principally fly the southern routes along the Atlantic coast seaboard to destination cities all over South America. They fly over great distances and carry passengers or freight. Their business is really good.
Likewise, Eastern Airlines has a great many jet planes of comparable size and range. They fly mostly northern routes up and down the east coast of the United States. They go to Europe.
Business is exceptionally good. Enterprising entrepreneurs have made fortunes in the airline industry. Some of them want to diversify. Some want to expand operations. The conservatives merely want to maintain the status quo, profitability, and their market share.
But, alas, competing interests have moved into the lucrative market. Older companies merge and new, larger corporations form. Thus, the industry becomes highly competitive. Corporations with a dozen aircraft zipping around the friendly skies, now have hundreds. Those with hundreds, suddenly have thousands. Chief executives make millions as a result.
One day, a new CEO steps in. His name is Carlos. Management thinks he demonstrates great potential and opens up new possibilities. Just what the company needs for running a vastly improved, modernized airline; for greater opportunity; and better wages. They are sadly mistaken. He is in actuality a greedy corporate raider. His ultimate purpose is not to improve and solidify the company, but down-size it. He proceeds to sell off all of its major assets. He fires most of the employees without much fanfare. In short, he quickly bankrupts the airline. It goes completely out of business, so there is no trace or iota of its former glory. Meanwhile, the employees picket. They lose their pensions and benefits. They pick themselves up off the ground, dust themselves off, pack up and go home. They are forced to seek employment elsewhere.
In the words of Frank Sinatra, “That’s life.” You do what you gotta do.
My advice, start over again fresh, with a new lease on life. It is not always such a cold, cruel, insensitive world in corporate America, as depicted by some flashy television program. You just need to get out of the stuffy office environment and see for yourself. Look beyond the horizon. Experience new things, explore, exercise your options. Be creative. In as much as you may want to keep up appearances, allow the show to continue, parade about in glamorous attire, and imitate Hollywood’s “Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous,” you know deep down in your heart, that when the last episode airs, and the show has been cancelled, it is time to move on. Deal with it. Make the best of your opportunities. Don’t go overboard.
I guess, I should reiterate at this crucial point of the pep talk, in order to avoid creating confusion or misunderstanding on the part of the reader, that my original intention was to provide a simplified illustration of the story’s plot, by means of an easy-to-understand analogy. The novel isn’t really about airlines. It’s more about human tendencies. What differentiates us from animals.

Oooh, this was a great, twisted read! I thought I knew everything that would be coming but, my goodness, I was wrong. I could not put this page-turner down and I was intrigued by all the women’s actions.

This book features three very strong, female protagonists. Kate, the ex-wife; Tish, the new wife; Ashlyn, Kate and John’s daughter. Whilst the two wives are warring, Ashlyn inevitably becomes involved and proves she is just as cunning as her elders. I liked all three characters for their contrasting personalities and I appreciated how the writer does justice to all of them in the narrative: it felt like they each had equal coverage and placement in the story.

From the very beginning, Rouda makes it clear what sort of personality belongs to each woman. In other words, we are given an obvious picture of who we should dislike and who we should support. However, there are also claims that surround the women that are supposedly born from jealousy of each of their relationship with John. For example, Tish considers Kate to be a drunk, bitter, ex-wife; Ashlyn supposedly has a strained relationship with her mother; Tish is the office floozy who seemingly walked into a position in the company and stole John’s heart. Unsurprisingly, it starts to get a little toxic between the three, especially as they are all meant to work together.

The backdrop of this story is the company that Kate and John own. Founding it together – like their relationship – so many years ago, today, this company is incredibly successful and being floated on the stock market. It’s a massive accomplishment, even if Kate and John’s marriage has not withstood the test of time. Ashlyn has been an intern at the company, witnessing not only the estranged, complicated relationship between her parents, but also the connection her father has with Tish, his shiny new wife. This aspect to the story is the driving element of the plot and I loved seeing how Ashlyn, Tish and Kate are foes within the office environment. I think it adds another intriguing element to the story.

Whilst the plot moves between the three women, Rouda makes character intentions obvious. However, the means in which they want to get what they desire is equally shocking and intriguing. I thought I had the plot predicted correctly, but the surprises that Rouda throws in towards the closing of the novel had me gasping in disbelief. This adds to the whole rollarcoaster ride that the story takes you on and I wondered whether any of the characters would actually stop in their actions. When would they reach their limit?

When I first started reading this book, I was a bit disgruntled at how obvious the plot direction was headed. However, it’s the path that is taken that makes this read so enjoyable. Yes, you may know what is coming but, on the other hand, the actions are thrilling and exciting down to the very last chapter. This may be my first read from Rouda but I do hope it is not my last.
