5.0 out of 5 stars I loved it

I devoured this thriller in two sit-ins over the weekend. It hit the US market last Tuesday, and it came home to me on Friday. This is the first time I have read a novel by British writer and journalist Alice Feeney.
Daisy Darker is a tribute to And Then There Were None (Ten Negritos) by Agatha Christie, in its form, rhythm and plot thread, to a certain extent. The Darker family, a very dysfunctional and distanced over time, hides several secrets that will be revealed in the text. Grandma invites you all to her 80th birthday party at her house on a tiny island called Seaglass. There is a storm and the storm surge rises to such an extent that once they all arrive at the house, it is impossible to return to the mainland, even because the only available boat that was anchored with a strong rope, someone has cut it and there is no way to get out of Seaglass, until the storm surges down and you can at least swim. But why want to leave if Grandma’s birthday celebration, which is Halloween Night, is just beginning? Well, it turns out that someone killed her while everyone was there, and the family members begin to die one by one. There’s no one else in the house, so one of them is the killer, but who? What motives do you have for committing this crime?
The novel is perfect to start this autumn Halloween season, because in addition to the thriller it explores the tropes of the best of mysteries and makes use of some brushstrokes of the gore aesthetic in a very subtle way. Its style, typical of the popular airport novel, not literary, of using ultra-short episodes with the technique of hooking, the cliffhanger popularized by Thomas Hardy in the 19th century, makes it bingereadable, like when we finished a streaming television series of our choice on a weekend. His prose is poetic, at times there are memorable and quotable phrases, unlike his contemporary Lisa Jewell, whose prose is flat, like the construction of his characters. Feeney stands out for his mastery of language, and surprising plot twists, even for Agatha Christie fans. I loved it.

REVIEW: Previous books by this author were Rock Paper Scissors (‘21 – 5 Stars) and His & Hers (‘20), I Know Who You Are (‘19) and Sometimes I Lie (‘18) which all received 4 Stars.
Right away after a couple of pages, I remember why I love this author. Her wearing is so smooth and comforting somehow like a warm blanket. She can really set the mood. I loved that this wasn’t your typical “and then there were none” type books. The writing makes everything so visual which made all the eeriness so much more and kept me on the edge of my seat. The path to the ending was just brilliant ! Soooo well done. A perfect read for Halloween !
4.0 out of 5 stars good, but felt longing

Suspenseful and entertaining, but felt a bit drawn out at times. Characters were well developed but I found most to be unpleasant at best.
