A Familiar Stranger Book Summary

Lillian Smith leads an unexceptional life, writing obituaries and killing time with her inattentive husband and disconnected son. Then she meets David, a handsome stranger, in a coffee shop. Lured into an affair, she invents a new persona, one without strings, deadlines, or brooding husbands.

Lillian has never felt so reckless, unpredictable, or wanted. But as her affair with David intensifies, she withdraws from everything that’s real, even her closest friend. When evidence of her life as a secret lover finds its way onto her son’s social media, she risks ruining much more than her marriage or reputation.

As lies beget lies, Lillian’s two worlds spiral dangerously out of control. And betrayals run deeper than she imagines. Because Lillian isn’t the only one leading a double life.

Lillian was a troubled woman who held conflicting thoughts about her happiness. After twenty years of marriage she was ready to figure out who she is. For the entirety of her marriage she became what her husband expected of her. It was not her own life anymore. She wondered who she would be without Mike so she searched for another life more exciting than our own. Lillian often wondered what would have happened if she’d chosen a different path in life.
An opportunity presented itself when she met David. David offered her an adventurous life. After being a creature of habit who’s life was boring and uneventful she decided to invent a new persona.
As Lillian gets locked into her own agenda her friendship with Sam takes a nosedive. Her relationship with her husband is nonexistent. Her son could care less about bonding with his mother. Lillian is far removed from the woman who was a wife and mother that she doesn’t realize that her husband’s life is unfolding into dangerous territory and her sons life is put on public display.

I felt the situation with David was left unfinished. I’m still unclear about the motives involving that last comment. The relationship with Jacob was one that wasn’t entirely flushed out.
This is a tricky story. My original thoughts didn’t lead me into the direction I thought Lillian’s character was going. Not to mention I looked too deep into some of the other characters searching for something that didn’t pan out.
This is the type of story that needs to be read with the understanding that AR Torre has a purpose and when she’s ready to reveal that you’ll understand.

Torre always guarantees her readers sit-on-the-edge-of-your-seat suspense, and she doesn’t disappoint with A Familiar Stranger. What I like about her storytelling is she always keeps you guessing. And ooh boy, did she get me with this one! From the beginning to the end, mystery abounds, and the thrill of this unconventional story is how I saw her heroine’s state of affairs and interpreted them. But Torre ensures that what one sees or believes is far from cut and dry.

Lillian Smith’s reality isn’t the norm. In a rut of sorts, her job writing obituaries and not such fabulous home life, I found surprisingly fascinating. I have a suspicion that she wouldn’t think the same as me. Entertaining her followers by writing speculatively fun if not morbid tweets is only the tip of the iceberg. Her quirky humour dampened when things backfire; I couldn’t have understood her frustration more.

Lillian slips easily into a habit that troubled me. Escapism at its worse, could she control it because I had certainly had my doubts. Doubts that led to the never expected blew my mind away. While this was going on, she trusted the circumstance. To me, it felt like watching a train wreck about to happen, and she had no blinking idea. However, I observed a happier woman who became more comfortable with herself, and I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed the new sassy Lillian. Therefore I can’t help but raise my glass to her, and whatever conscious actions she’d chosen to do were fine by me.

Did her husband notice that change in his wife, who he’d been neglecting? Even bigger question. What was he hiding? And her best friend? Torre fooled me into believing the goodie was a baddie and vice versa. Well, there was one person I loved to bits. Whether they were a drinking partner or confidant, even someone to pass the time and let off steam, I was so grateful that Torre developed such a marvellous character.

Not only does Torre grab your attention from the word go, but she also challenges her readers. What was coming, I never envisaged for a minute, and that frustrated me as I like to think I can work out who the wrongdoer is. Her spectacular narrative makes for a psychological thriller that keeps you in a state of uncertainty, waiting for more. The finale! Quite brilliant. Simply bravo, Torre!

I seem to be asking myself this question a lot lately, but why did I wait so long to read a book by A.R. Torre?! I was hooked by A Familiar Stranger from the very first page, and by the end of the book, my mouth had dropped open more than once. I loved the different viewpoints Torre used and the way they all added to the story instead of taking away from it. This also had an excellent chill-inducing ending (for me), and it was incredibly satisfying minus one little thing. It did have a little bit of a cliffhanger ending as well and it leaves you with some questions but in general, almost everything is buttoned up and I was fine with the way it ended (normally I hate cliffhangers of any kind).

If you’re looking for another audiobook recommendation, then let A Familiar Stranger be it. This book was SO good on audio and there is a full cast of narrators which is my absolute favorite. Christina Traister, Chris Ciulla, Patrick Lawlor, & Leon Nixon all did such a wonderful job with their characters, and even though some POVs come up more than others, that didn’t take away from how great they were individually. I will say though that I didn’t realize until I was in a discussion for it, that I had missed one revelation completely, so maybe have a copy of the physical book as well. When I do a reread, I am going to have to pay a little closer attention, so I don’t miss anything. The pacing was on point and Torre had me suspecting so many things. I didn’t guess a single twist though and that is the best kind of thriller.
