The Path of Daggers Overview
The Path of Daggers pdf is a fantasy novel by American author Robert Jordan, it is the eighth book The Wheel of Time Series. It was published by Tor Books and released on October 20, 1998.
As it was released, it immediately rose to the #1 position on the New York Times hardcover fiction bestseller list, making it the first Wheel of Time book to reach the #1 position on that list. It remained on the list for the next two months. This book is the shortest book in the main Wheel of Time series, consisting of a prologue and 31 chapters.
The title of the book is referenced to a Seanchan saying: “On the heights, all paths are paved with daggers.”
The Path of Daggers Summary
Elayne Trakand, Nynaeve al’Meara, Aviendha, and their coalition of channelers use the ter’angreal called the ‘Bowl of the Winds’ to reverse the unnatural heat brought by the Dark One’s manipulation of the climate, and then escape a Seanchan invasion by Traveling to Andor with most of the Kin who had not yet been captured by the Seanchan. In Andor, an Aes Sedai in their party is murdered, and the group realizes that one of its members is Black Ajah. Upon reaching Caemlyn, Elayne initiates her claim to the throne.
Perrin Aybara moves into Ghealdan to stop Masema Dagar, the self-proclaimed Prophet of the Dragon; but unknowingly rescues the deposed Queen Morgase of Andor from the Prophet’s men. He then secures the oath of fealty from Alliandre, Queen of Ghealdan, and accepts the dubious allegiance of Masema. At the end of the book, Faile Bashere is kidnapped by the Shaido Aiel. Egwene al’Vere, Amyrlin Seat of the rebel Aes Sedai, manipulates her unruly followers into giving her more control, and they Travel to Tar Valon, before their siege of its White Tower.
Rand al’Thor, accompanied by Bashere with fifty Asha’man and six thousand Tairens, Cairhienin and Illianers, attempts to repel the Seanchan invasion in Altara. They are successful in early skirmishes, driving the Seanchan from western Altara entirely. Bashere counsels retreat, but Rand decides to push on to Ebou Dar, clashing with a forty thousand strong Seanchan army fifty miles from the city. Both sides bleed each other white in the initial clash, after which both armies pull back to regroup. Rand attempts to destroy the Seanchan by wielding his sa’angreal ‘Callandor’, but loses control of it due to disturbances in saidin caused by the previous usage of the Bowl of the Winds. The result is a lightning storm that devastates his army as well as the Seanchan. Too bloodied to continue fighting, both armies retreat, making the battle a stalemate. Returning to Cairhien, Rand is attacked by a traitorous Asha’man led by Corlan Dashiva, who fails to kill him. Mat Cauthon is absent from the book, due to injuries sustained at the end of the previous book, A Crown of Swords.

The Path of Daggers Author – Robert Jordan

So ends the eighth book of the Wheel of Time pdf. I’m marking this one on the low end of four stars. I will warn that there may be slight, slight spoilers below. If you don’t want to know things like who is still alive, or who is in this book, I’d steer clear. Otherwise, I will keep any major spoilers contained and marked, which I’ve done in my recent reviews for this series.
So here I am. In the middle of the series. I think I can now say that I’ve reached the point that fans often refer to as the slump. The infamous slowing of pace that readers often point to in (and this is up for debate) books seven through ten. I want to address the so-called slump, seeing as how it’s such a pervasive topic when this series comes up.
Firstly, and you’ll hear this a lot, the slump really isn’t so bad for readers nowadays for one simple reason; we don’t have to wait for the books to come out. I can absolutely see why waiting for these books would be somewhat tortuous, especially seeing as how Jordan likes to end the books with a bang; often with some twist or large plot-changing event. So revving the pace way up at the end only to have your readers waiting for a couple years on your next installment is understandably frustrating. Be that as it may, I don’t have to wait. And while I’ll be reading something else before I go on, I could jump right into Winter’s Heart if I wanted to. So that’s one big part of it. The other is that I simply think it’s overstated. Now, the next couple books could slow to a mind-numbing crawl, forcing me to eat my words, but even so, thus far the slowing of pace has not been so bad. It has been noticeable, but not nearly as noticeable as I anticipated. Yes, events have slowed. One of the biggest contributing factors to that is that our characters are so spread out. It may be ten chapters before you get back to a certain plot line. It’s just the nature of the beast when it comes to these huge epics. I guess I also benefit from having anticipated it, but it really just isn’t that bad. The Wheel of Time has never been a series of lightning fast pacing. Jordan is a very descriptive writer; he has been from the beginning. And sometimes that means a slower pace. However it also means a larger payoff, a bigger reward, when the weaves come together. And as I’ve mentioned before, I’m so invested in this world and story at this point that I’m willing to read through slower bits to see how the story unfolds. The Path of Daggers also happens to be the shortest book in the series, and it looks like Winter’s Heart isn’t much longer. So it’s hard to get upset about a slower pace when I feel like I’m finishing the book rather quickly. Okay, that’s enough about that.
There’s not too much I can say about the story that doesn’t dive into spoiler territory at this point. Jordan has woven many threads into this thing, many threads. And I enjoy reading about each one. I was glad to have Perrin get some great chapters here. Egwene’s story is more interesting by the chapter, and as usual I can’t get enough Rand chapters. I’m always a bit disappointed to leave one behind. I was surprised and a little bummed to have no Mat POVs at all in this one. I expect he’ll have a fair bit next book to make up for it. Fingers crossed. Eight down and six to go.

Think I am done with this, too much paddling

Why are adults being paddled and paddling or threatening to paddle people? And why would an adult come around to heal because they were paddled? And none of the women are particularly likable. Why are they always applying gross stereotypes to the opposit sex? I suppose someone who likes S&M thinks this is great, but about the time the story gets going, here comes another abuse situation. And paddling is abuse. And with that creepy lady saying she is going to have to teach Rand to laugh and to cry????
So many characters who act immature. I can’t imagine this is youth fiction, but I think you need to be pretty immature to really like these books. Very graphic novelish.

Path of Daggers pdf is the second weak WoT entry in a row, and I’m getting a little concerned for the quality of the series moving forward. There’s a few highlights, and the last 100 pages finally bring some much needed excitement, but for the most part this is just filler. There’s plenty of details of the various character parties getting themselves in position for upcoming battles, and all the political maneuverings of the Aes Sedai and nobles explained in great detail, but it all just feels so… blah. Even worse, if like me, you were anxiously waiting to find out what happened to Mat from the cliffhanger in the last book, where he was trapped in Ebou Dar during the Seanchan invasion, you’ll be bitterly disappointed as Mat isn’t even mentioned in this book. Frustrating.
The Wheel of Time pdf feels like it’s growing out of control. The sheer number of characters is overwhelming, and I’m having a hard time remembering any of them outside the core group of regulars. Women who can channel for example, now, include two different factions of Aes Sedai, the Black Ajah, The Aiel Wise Ones, The Kin, and now the Sea Folk – there’s probably a hundred characters named there alone. Most of them disappear for a couple of books and then pop back in, making it hard to remember what their purpose was.
I’m still enjoying the series, but I have to admit I’m not in a great hurry to pick up the next book.

Path of Daggers is the red-headed stepchild of the Wheel of Time pdf series: as noted by other reviewers Mat Cauthon – the series character who is a majority of readers’ favorite or second favorite character – is entirely absent from this book. Moreover, he is absent despite an ending in the previous book worthy of an old-time Movie serial. That said, and (I’ve deducted a star for that), the book is otherwise a worthwhile entry in the series. A lot of non-Mat stuff that was going on in the previous books continues to go on and is a fairly reasonable place. The Perrin sequences aren’t as frustrating as most Perrin scenes are, and it’s nice to finally see the weather change. This may seem like damning with faint praise – but it is not intended as such – it’s a very long series (some 4 million words) so presumably you are reading it in part because you want to read a very long story. Not every page or every book of a very long story can be A+ content – this is a B/B+ novel (with a few A scenes in it) in an otherwise overall A+ series. It suffers in comparison to some of the books that have come before, and some of the books that come after – but that doesn’t mean it should be given three stars simply because the reviewer is annoyed Mat doesn’t show up again until the next book.
