The Fires of Heaven Overview
The Fires of Heaven is a fantasy novel by Robert Jordan, an American distinguished writer, the fifth book in his series The Wheel of Time.
It was published by Tor Books and released on October 15, 1993.
It is the first novel in the series to not involve an appearance by each of the three ta’veren from the Two Rivers, due to Perrin’s absence. The Fires of Heaven consists of a prologue and 56 chapters.

In Rhuidean, worried by news that Aiel from other clans join the cause of his enemy Couladin, Rand al’Thor confers with the Clan Chiefs who have recognised him as the Car’a’carn – Chief of Chiefs – on how to win over the four remaining Clans. Darkhounds attack and he kills them with balefire, a powerful weave that burns a person’s thread backwards through the Pattern, undoing his past actions for a short time prior to being consumed by balefire. Egwene al’Vere continues to chafe under the instruction of Aiel Wise Ones, eager to learn faster than they think is wise, and Moiraine Damodred grows increasingly desperate to find her way into Rand’s circle of trust.
In Tanchico, Nynaeve and Elayne set out for the White Tower — only to receive news that it has suffered a schism. Elaida, a Red sister and former advisor to Queen Morgase Trakand, has deposed and replaced the Former Amyrlin Seat and ally Siuan Sanche.
Unwilling to accept an outsider as their prophesied hero, the Shaido and their allies follow Couladin across the Dragonwall to conquer the “treekillers” and wetlanders. Rand Al’thor leads the seven Aiel Clans who have recognised him in pursuit and is followed in turn by the four of the undecided Aiel Clans. Along the way they are ambushed by Darkfriends and Shadowspawn but arrive in time to save the city of Cairhien and defeat the Shaido, in part thanks to the memories of long dead generals the Eelfinn have placed in Matrim Cauthon’s mind. Couladin is killed in single combat by Mat, while Rand is attacked from afar by either Rahvin or Sammael during the course of the battle.
As Rand establishes his control of Cairhien, a nation torn apart by scheming and war, he learns that the Forsaken Rahvin has deposed Queen Morgase who is presumed dead. Furious at himself for not acting sooner, Rand prepares to travel to Andor personally and kill Rahvin in revenge, but is delayed by Moiraine. Lanfear attacks Rand who is unwilling to fight back. Rand is saved by the sacrifice of Moirane who foresaw Lanfear’s attack.
Meanwhile Nynaeve and Elayne seek out the rebel Aes Sedai accompanied by Thom and Juilin, discovering the forkroot herb that incapacitates channelers and clashing again with the forsaken Moghedien, eventually capturing her in the world of dreams.
Rand Skims to Caemlyn, where his forces enter a trap laid by Rahvin. Lightning bolts triggered by Rahvin kill Mat, Asmodean and Aviendha, which causes Rand to recklessly attack the Forsaken. His battle with Rahvin leads him into the world of dreams, where with the assistance of Nynaeve he destroys Rahvin with Balefire. Upon returning to the waking world, he discovers that his balefire undid Rahvin’s killings of Mat, Aviendha and Asmodean. Before waking Nynaeve realizes Moghedien is posing as a refugee in the rebel Aes Sedai camp and doses her with forkroot, allowing her to be leashed in the real world with a ter’angreal crafted by Elayne.

Good to a point

One thing that has bothered me from the start of the series is that every character has major anger issues and is always in such a bad mood. Waking up, responding, dreaming, suspicious, jealous, thinking, questioning and assuming the worst in everyone’s intentions and so very serious. Everything makes them so furious! The is NO humor in this book at all. Every character gets raving mad, or offended, at the drop of a pin and it gets tiresome. The mood needed some lightness after all the violence, evil deeds and torture. Some down time to find a reason to wan to stay in this dismal, evil place. A reason to want to fight for it. Does anyone ever smile or say thank you or have a kind word to speak? Being nice is so VERY un-common. The characters that are supposed to love each other, are at each other’s throats half the time and can’t figure the other one out. Those in love are insensitive and flat. That these two people are in love, and yet would really treat each other like that, astounds me. Where are the redeeming qualities? I HOPE THIS IS NOT how people in love really act! Men tend to take more cowards roll when it comes to who’s right, and in charge and going to get their way. Women tend to be, and feel, more superior and smarter, and at times, are real big bullies, hard hearted and cruel, to those they consider inferior in any way including their own kind. They constantly cut men down making a less respectful roll play between the two. I prefer a more equal respectful interaction finding some redeeming qualities in both. The story has so many characters and sub plots shooting off in all directions, it is hard to keep track of whom will remain important, and who’s a passing character. It can be so detailed it’s hard to know what you really need to remember and what isn’t that important. It’s very twisty and over thought with detail that bogs down the story and keeps it from moving forward. Sometimes to much story between switching from one character to another, it’s difficult to remember what was happening when you get back to them. Wish there was little more gentleness and beauty in this world and in the hearts of the characters. Everyone is so hard, cruel, sad and miserable. I can’t believe there still so many books to read before the ending. It’s supposed to get better, but I’m not sure I’ll make it at this point. Great story line but too dismal.

That might sound like a pretty odd and simple title. This whole series is filled with long books. This latest isn’t the longest and yet it took a week and a half of reading and audiobook every day. It’s an epic for sure.
This particular entry in the series is a very strong one filled with some great action, huge plot moments and some real story progression. Have to say, this is the my favourite since the second. Though – my ongoing two major complaints remain: all women in this book are portrayed as short tempered and angry and not a single person in this book has a sense of humour or seems like they have fun – maybe Mat!

Having rated all the previous books in the series 5 stars already, it’s not possible for me to go any higher. I will say this though, this is my favourite in the series so far. All the books have contributed to the lore, of course, and this one builds on it. A very brief and unfair review would be to say that this is a book about traveling. Rand Al Thor travels west with Egwene, Mat, Moraine, Lan, and the Aiel. Elaine travels with Nynaeve, Thom, and Julien. Siuan Sanche travels with Leane and Min. No Perrin in this book, unfortunately, but a bit more of Mat. Some good stuff there!
The series has me so involved in these characters, that even the slowly diminishing influence of Moraine and Lan hasn’t upset me too much (so far). Once again, a five star book, in what has so far been a five star series. Slow at times, lengthy to an intimidating extent, but definitely worth it.

Overall yet another great book in the series. And what I do love is how the plot develops without the author feeling the need to fleshing the book out with filler.
Reason for 4 stars instead of 5: The one complaint I have, which is getting worse book by book is how every female character seems to constantly insult men in the general sense. Every other line from a female character seems to be – men are fools. Men are stupid. Men can’t think for themselves. Men shouldn’t be let off their mum’s apron stings… it is literally every other sentence and it gets tedious. Especially when they do the exact thing right after/before that they accuse men of being stupid for doing.
Funny enough the men make no such comments about women. They often talk about not understanding women, or wishing they understood women better, but not insulting all women constantly.
