I think this is my favourite book by this author so far. It has all the elements of his other books but somehow it’s better. Jason Rich is an “ambulance chasing” type of attorney and he’s made a lot of money doing it (I enjoyed the author’s insights on this) but he’s also a mess. At the start of the book, he’s finishing off a 90-day stint in rehab for alcohol abuse. He’s in trouble with the bar association and teetering on the brink of disaster. His personal life is also a mess because he’s also recently divorced. The author makes sure that we know that this guy is not a typical hero. He then hears that his sister is being accused of murdering her husband and has asked him to help. His sister is just as big of a mess as he is. They haven’t seen each other for years after they fell out around the time of their father’s funeral. The reason Jason gets involved is because of his nieces. The reason my stomach was in knots is that the reader is just waiting for the other shoe to drop. Will Jason take a drink again? He flirts with this danger throughout the book. His sister’s case looks impossible to win and he has no experience as a defence attorney. I finished this book in a day and now I’ve got a long wait to read another about this character. Don’t worry, there are no cliff hangers.

This was a very good novel . It had a few surprises a couple of twists I didn’t see coming. This reminds me of the great Charlie Sloan novels . I gave it a five star read in part because of the price as well as how good the story was told.
I think this has the potential to become a first rate series.
It is not the great American Novel. It doesn’t try to be either .
What it is , is a first class mystery , told with flair at a price point that was ridiculous low. It had a great hook , crafted well and the ending was first class.
The side kicks were underdeveloped. Woefully so. I can see a branch of major improvement in this area. As was the protagonists back story. The character Chase made little sense to this story. I much rather had more back ground on the Ex wife Larkin. I liked the protagonist , I see a lot here to work with. I highly recommend this work . It goes beyond the genre of JUST another mystery.

A good writer creates characters in whom the reader becomes emotionally invested so said reader cares what happens to the character as the story progresses. I very much enjoy Robert Bailey’s “serial” books!
Having read all of Mr. Bailey’s two previous “serial” books (6 out of 7 books), I find his method of developing fleshed out main characters alongside of less developed characters which are ancillary to the specific story in the series, to be quite efficient and tantalizing. Without devoting entire chapters to developing minor characters, Mr. Bailey builds on the background of an individual character he has only touched on in a previous book, bringing that character onto center stage for the new story line. Effortlessly, the stage is set and the reader becomes emotionally invested in an entire ensemble of familiar characters. Even this first in the series book mentions characters I feel I have known and loved before.
