The Ex Hex Summary

Nine years ago, Vivienne Jones nursed her broken heart like any young witch would: vodka, weepy music, bubble baths…and a curse on the horrible boyfriend. Sure, Vivi knows she shouldn’t use her magic this way, but with only an “orchard hayride” scented candle on hand, she isn’t worried it will cause him anything more than a bad hair day or two.

That is until Rhys Penhallow, descendent of the town’s ancestors, breaker of hearts, and annoyingly just as gorgeous as he always was, returns to Graves Glen, Georgia. What should be a quick trip to recharge the town’s ley lines and make an appearance at the annual fall festival turns disastrously wrong. With one calamity after another striking Rhys, Vivi realizes her silly little Ex Hex may not have been so harmless after all.

Suddenly, Graves Glen is under attack from murderous wind-up toys, a pissed off ghost, and a talking cat with some interesting things to say. Vivi and Rhys have to ignore their off the charts chemistry to work together to save the town and find a way to break the break-up curse before it’s too late.

1.0 out of 5 stars The premise was so good…but the book wasn’t.

Ugh, the premise sounded so good.

And this story could have been amazing. Except it wasn’t.

I was SO bored and annoyed reading this book. Maybe it’s because the f-bomb was ⅓ of the word count. Ok, I’m exaggerating a bit but it was extreme.

I consider myself an easy-to-please reader and give out a lot of 4 and 5 stars reviews. Unfortunately, this was a one-star read for me.

I wanted to like this SO badly, but it read like a first draft and lacked any emotional expression. I read what their emotions were, but didn’t feel them at all. It lacked the classic ‘show, don’t tell.’ Not to mention it seemed like every single character was either half developed or had an identical personality to the other person in the scene with them. I don’t know if this is truly the author’s fault, as I did just come off reading one of the best and most perfect novels of my life. So this may be overly critical.

*Spoilers*
Things we could have done without:
So much emphasis on her attraction to him in every chapter. Piper, the rare candle and the human con artist who somehow got this rare candle. The constant sarcasm and jokes. Poor communication (and overused trope). Less information about Rhys brothers; I still don’t’ know what their functions were to the plot.

What we needed more of:
Character depth and motivations. Intervention from the Witchery Dept (did they just let magic run wild and not try to contain it?). An explanation about Vivi’s mother, like is she dead or not and did magic kill her, why is everyone weird about mentioning her? A SLOWED DOWN STORYLINE- this book would have been 1000% better if it was slowed down a bit. The whole climax in the cave lasted like half a page. HALF. A. PAGE. The whole thing felt rushed, even the smut.

It wasn’t horrible, it was a fun, easy read and don’t take it too seriously.

I’m new to Tiktok, but it took me 2.5secs to find booktok and Ive never never looked back. This is the second recc I’ve ever downloaded from it, the first suggestion was….lackluster.

I’m so glad it wasn’t the case with this book! It’s charming, it’s sweet, I genuinely liked the heroine. I loved the town, I loved the plot. I loved everything about this and I’m happy to be surprised!

This book was a delight. It’s not going to change your life, and it’s not going to go down in history as a classic, but if you’re looking for a feel good read with a modern witchy premise-this is it. I breezed through it in two bedtimes, chuckled a few times, and thought, “Huh, that was fun!” when I was finished. What more can you want? I didn’t go into it expecting Moby Dick, so maybe I enjoyed it more?

Second Chance Romance + Witches + Witty Banter is the spell for The Ex Hex.

This is a quick light hearted easy read that had me laughing more than I anticipated. Cute story with a few surprises I didn’t see coming.

The cousin stole the show for me. Her sassy one liners had me wishing she had more page time.
