Not a Happy Family Summary
Brecken Hill in upstate New York is an expensive place to live. You have to be rich to have a house there, and Fred and Sheila Merton certainly are rich. But even all their money can’t protect them when a killer comes to call. The Mertons are brutally murdered after a fraught Easter dinner with their three adult kids. Who, of course, are devastated.
Or are they? They each stand to inherit millions. They were never a happy family, thanks to their vindictive father and neglectful mother, but perhaps one of the siblings is more disturbed than anyone knew. Did someone snap after that dreadful evening? Or did another person appear later that night with the worst of intentions? That must be what happened. After all, if one of the family were capable of something as gruesome as this, you’d know.

1.0 out of 5 stars A Disappointed Reader
Reviewed in the United States on August 1, 2021
Every character was so unlikeable, including the murdered parents…the more I read the less I cared who committed the crime or what happened to any of them. They were all deceitful and unstable…not one of them was worth rooting for. I forced myself to finish the book but did a lot of skimming. The only happy moment was when I got to the last page and was done with this silly, boring book. Don’t waste your money.
5.0 out of 5 stars A NICELY TWISTED, BELIEVABLE READ

One should keep their eyes open when reading an Shari Lapena book. This book is about family, greed, and what may have been passed along in the gene pool. Beautifully written and well planned. You will like and hate the characters involved. At the end you find out who did it, but the author was only being kind in revealing it. If she hadn’t you would have been up for days thinking about it. Thank-you Ms. Lapena —Bean
2.0 out of 5 stars Quick read but repetitive and anticlimactic ending
Reviewed in the United States on August 18, 2021
The short chapters make for a quick read, however the storyline becomes very repetitive. The detectives calling in the same suspects and having the same dialogue over and over. At times it’s a little unbelievable, usually when you request a lawyer you stop speaking, however in all instances the suspects continue to speak and implicate themselves with their lawyers present. Almost all of the characters were unlikable and the reveal was quite anticlimactic. Very abrupt and left me feeling unsatisfied.
5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Who Done It

Great author! I have enjoyed each of her books. This book kept me interested and puzzled throughout the story. I agree with one of the other reviewers, that none of the characters were particularly likeable but I was still intrigued and somehow the characters made it more genuine. It was one of those books so well written that I didn’t want it to end but wanted to find out who the murderer was.
