Act Your Age, Eve Brown Summary

Eve Brown is a certified hot mess. No matter how hard she strives to do right, her life always goes horribly wrong. So she’s given up trying. But when her personal brand of chaos ruins an expensive wedding (someone had to liberate those poor doves), her parents draw the line. It’s time for Eve to grow up and prove herself—even though she’s not entirely sure how…

Jacob Wayne is in control. Always. The bed and breakfast owner’s on a mission to dominate the hospitality industry and he expects nothing less than perfection. So when a purple-haired tornado of a woman turns up out of the blue to interview for his open chef position, he tells her the brutal truth: not a chance in hell. Then she hits him with her car—supposedly by accident. Yeah, right.

Now his arm is broken, his B&B is understaffed, and the dangerously unpredictable Eve is fluttering around, trying to help. Before long, she’s infiltrated his work, his kitchen—and his spare bedroom. Jacob hates everything about it. Or rather, he should. Sunny, chaotic Eve is his natural-born nemesis, but the longer these two enemies spend in close quarters, the more their animosity turns into something else. Like Eve, the heat between them is impossible to ignore… and it’s melting Jacob’s frosty exterior.

I don’t think I’ve laughed so much at a book in forever! Talks Hibbert made Eve’s book the perfect conclusion to the the sister’s series. From page one I was laughing. So we know that Eve has flitted around aimlessly from job to newest endeavor for her adult life all in an effort to please everyone around her. When her parents cut her off from her trust fund and tell her she must get a job and housing, that’s not the kick in the pants. It’s the implications that they’re embarrassed that does it for Eve. She finds herself at a B&B that is need of a chef, Eve has dabbled in culinary arts so wth? The owner, A grumpy, m grump who has an opinion about everyone! However, his best friend Mont is there to keep him in line. Of course straight laced Jacob is wondering what a candidate is doing showing up without a resume and looking like she’s been in a wet t-shirt contest…he’s not hiring this woman! Mont reminds him of the situation he’s in and he can’t be too demanding due to his circumstances. After an unfortunate accident, she’s hired. Their forced proximity leads to a slow burning romance and I did not expect the BOM, Chicka BOM BOM out of buttoned up, glasses Jacob. It was Clark Kent turning into porn star Superman. I loved that because he understood his diagnosis, he could see the subtlety in Eve that no one ever thought of. This book was amazing on so many levels and I would say that Talia saved the best for last. So many great scenes and quotes, a variable swoon fest at times. Jacob found his Sunshine and neither needed a reason to run or shut anyone out!💕💕💕

**Thank you to net galley and Avon books for providing an advanced copy of this book**

Everything in this review is my honest and personal opinion based on my personal experience just so we’re clear.

This was the best piece of autistic representation I’ve ever come across. I especially appreciated that I could even relate to the cishet white male representation because he wasn’t the stereotypical cardboard cut out Sheldon Cooper portrayal of autism. I’ve said from the start of this series that the brown sisters have autistic traits so it was nice to finally have that representation in print. Eve’s story of feeling like a failure and her parents putting pressure on her to grow up was far too relatable to me and I absolutely sobbed in the first chapter. Not because anything was sad but because I felt seen. Talia Hibbert was able to put into words what I have never been able to.

As for the romance between Eve and Jacob while unconventional, it was true to their characters and realistic to me as an autistic woman. It was the kind of relationship I hope for some day. Talia Hibbert always makes sure to put an emphasis on compatibility and understanding, dismantling the idea that you love someone “in spite of their faults” and it does wonders for my internalized ableism.

I cried through most of this book, even when it wasn’t sad, because I felt understood and I have never related to a character more than I have Eve Brown, (although Chloe Brown is a close second). This book brought me a lot of joy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Two imperfect people being imperfectly perfect together

I purchased this book along time ago. It sat in my queue and I would pass it up each time I needed something to read. I don’t know what made me wait so long to read this book. I trust Talia Hibbert. I love the cadence of her writing and I appreciate her storytelling. But, she can be angsty! And I think, earlier in the year, I just was not in the brain space to appreciate that type of story. But, I’m doing an informal reading challenge and this was the suggested books. Learn from my mistake, please. Read this book as soon as you can and revel in this story about Eve and Jacob in this last story of the Brown sisters.
Eve is a self-described mess. She’s lovely, she comes from a brilliant family, has had a privileged childhood, but she can’t focus. Because of that, and the career successes of her two older sisters, she always feels less than. She believes that if she were to try and fail why even bother trying at all? It’s only when she’s given an ultimatum by her parents that she’s forced to take a hard look at her behavior and truly figure out what makes her happy. It’s in this quest that she meets Jacob and crashes, quite literally, into his life and into a job.
Jacob is a stickler for rules. He is on the autism spectrum and he finds that order helps him keep things straight and his mind clear. Imagine his shock when this lovely beautiful black woman with purple braids and a lovely smile, who also appears completely disorganized and a bit of a mess, interviews for the chef position at his bed-and-breakfast. He has no intention of hiring her, but circumstances being what they are, he gives her a trial run for at least 4 weeks. He does not want Eve’s help but realizes that she can offer softness and banter with his guests that he is uncomfortable doing.
On paper Eve and Jacob shouldn’t work. Not only are their lives completely opposite, but the way they handle situations differ quite a bit. However, it is in those differences that they seem to find comfort in one another; where Eve seems a bit scattered, Jacob is calm. Where Jacob is more rigid, Eve finds ways to make him smile and to find joy in the mundane. So, in the midst of these weeks where they are working together, and Eve trying to figure out where she fits, they both realize that they work well together. And, because this is a romance, the attraction builds.
Ms Hibbert knows how to write a romance and she definitely knows how to write a sex/seduction scene! However, this book is through and through an ode to imperfect people and acknowledging love being a catalyst for not necessarily saving but for realizing that being perfect is boring. There can be joy and love and laughter in appreciating your imperfectness and celebrating what makes you.
This is a lovely story and I am mad it took me so long to get to it.
Side note: I would love story’s about Mont and his twin sisters!
