I don’t know what I have been doing with my life or why Look Closer is my first time reading David Ellis, but please excuse me while I read his ENTIRE backlist now! This book completely blew my mind, and it was filled with nonstop twists and turns, so much so that it basically had my head spinning. You definitely need to be a fan of the unreliable narrator trope to truly enjoy this, but if you love that trope you are going to love this book. It had a lot of action in it, and once I started, I knew there was no way I was going to put it down. Never mind the fact that I couldn’t anyway because I was reading it for a book discussion the same day, but we will overlook that fact. There are quite a few different viewpoints and a lot of characters, and it did take me a bit to catch onto who everyone was but once I did, I was golden. The plot is both complex and incredibly clever, and I am still shaking my head just thinking about how well Ellis had me fooled.

Another great thing about Look Closer is that it has an exceptional audiobook that is narrated by a full cast! I will say that at times I had somewhat of a hard time understanding the guy that narrated Christian (he sounded oddly muffled?) but I figured it out and I did love the audiobook overall. The full list of narrators (for anyone who wants to know) is Will Damron, Hillary Huber, Elizabeth Garrett & Steve West, and I was happy to see Huber on the list since she is one of my favorites. The audio was enjoyable to listen to and it will be coming highly recommended by me especially since Christian doesn’t have very many parts – HA! There were also elements of this book that broke my heart, and I was surprised by how emotional the end made me. All I know is that Ellis knows what he’s doing and if you are a fan of crime fiction, thrillers, and mysteries then I would add Look Closer to your must-read list immediately.

I have to admit, I have a weakness for an unreliable narrator. Especially when the unreliable narrator is telling a story and keeping a journal simultaneously. And when the author keeps leaving clues to the plot and you don’t even realize what you’re reading are clues. And, of course, when you can’t see the forest for the trees because you’re focusing so closely on those trees.
I’ve never read anything by David Ellis before, but he’s co-written four books with David Patterson, which probably means he’s actually…well, you know…you can finish that sentence. I’m now a huge admirer of Mr. Ellis, but I can’t bring myself to read anything with Mr. Patterson’s name on the cover. Well, maybe if you paid me…
What David Ellis has come up with in “Look Closer” is probably one of the best-plotted, best structured, and best written thrillers of the year so far. It is one of my two favorite thrillers of the summer, right up there next to Paul Tremblay’s “The Pallbearers Club”. It puts novels like “The Plot”, “The House Across The Lake” and “The Island” to shame.
Simon and his wife Vicky have been married almost ten years when Simon recognizes his first love on the street one afternoon. He begins a torrid affair with Lauren Betancourt because the light has gone out in his marriage. Vicky works for a domestic abuse shelter called Safe Haven. She appears to love Simon for his money. She hires a money manager named Christian, because there’s a trust fund in David’s name that becomes hers as well after 10 years of marriage. Then Lauren is found murdered on the day after Halloween, three days before the trust fund opens up to Vicky. But something about this whole set-up isn’t quite right. David was once accused of his father’s murder. Vicky was a junkie who became a hooker who became a wife. And Christian may not really be what he says he is. He’s pulling a grand scam on both Simon and Vicky. Or so it seems.
Unreliable narrators abound here, but to what purpose? Therein lies the deliciousness of this thriller. You’re never quite sure what’s really going on, and the twists and backstory details keep piling up, showing dark and mysterious sides to everyone.
This book threw for a few loops. It is dizzying, it is propulsive, it is so clever, and yet so intriguing all at once.
I think I’ll have to go back and read a few more books by Mr. Ellis. He’s my kind of writer. And I anxiously await whatever comes next.

This book has me in the mood for spooky season! Give me all the fuzzy socks, hoodies, bonfires, and PSLs! ‘Look Closer’ is exactly what you need to do when reading this novel. I really can’t even explain it without giving you too much info so here are the basics:

Simon and Vicky have a normal stable marriage. When a woman is found hanging in her mansion nearby, all of their secrets begin to unravel and NOTHING is what it seems. I’ve never read a book as twisty as this! Going in, you know your goal is to look closer and pick apart everything but the only way you’re going to figure out what’s going on is if you cheat and read the ending first.
I’m still shocked and I finished it yesterday. David Ellis is an exceptional writer and I truly hope there are more like this one to come!
