Acts of Violet Summary
Nearly a decade ago, iconic magician Violet Volk performed her greatest trick yet: vanishing mid-act. While Violet sought out the spotlight, her sister Sasha, had to be the responsible one. But Sasha can never seem to escape her sister’s tumultuous orbit. Then there’s Cameron Frank, determined to finally get his big break hosting a podcast devoted to all things Violet—though keeping his job hinges on an exclusive interview with Sasha, the last person who wants to talk to him. As the ten-year anniversary approaches, the podcast picks up steam, and Cameron’s pursuit of Sasha becomes increasingly intrusive. Meanwhile, Sasha begins to experience an unsettling series of sleepwalking episodes and coincidences, which all lead back to Violet. Pushed to her emotional limits, Sasha must finally confront the most painful truths about her sister, and herself, even at the risk of losing everything.
Alternating between Sasha’s narration and Cameron’s podcast transcripts, interspersed with documents that offer a tantalizing peek at Violet herself, Acts of Violet is an utterly original, propulsive story of fame, deception, and forgiveness that will make you believe in magic.

3.0 out of 5 stars For Lovers of Magic

I have been looking forward to this book all year as Montimore’s previous book (Oona Out of Order) is a personal fave.
I’m a firm believer, as I’ve said before, your circumstances or state of mind can effect your enjoyment of a book. I read Acts of Violet while traveling with my kids. Thus, I was reading it in very small segments – only a few pages at a time. Reading in this manner makes it hard for me to really get into a book. For this reason, my rating isn’t what it might have otherwise been. Keep that in mind while reading my review.
Violet Volk, a famous magician, disappeared mid-show without a trace. Ten years later, the adoring public is still wondering what happened – is she still alive? Is she dead? Back home, Sasha (Violet’s sister) can’t escape the publicity around the disappearance. I typically enjoy the magical realism genre, but this has a solid layer of sci-fi which isn’t my fave. I could’ve done without the physics explanations.
The plot line is well constructed and I enjoyed the narrative style. The story is told through a series of flashbacks, emails and podcast episodes. In this sense, the audiobook is very well done with a high production value – multiple narrators and different sound effects make the book come to life. However, Brittany Pressley (narrator) is simply not my cup of tea as she tends to make everything sound very “YA drama.” That’s my personal opinion – many folks love her.
I was fully intrigued for the first half of the book and then things went south. The story is a veeeerrrry slow unraveling. It’s essentially a character study of Sasha and the myriad of ways Violet’s career and disappearance have effected her life. I would’ve been fine with this had the ending been worth it. ‘‘Twas not…the ending was very disappointing.

Margarita Montimore’s follow up to Oona did not disappoint. I was fascinated from the beginning about the relationship between two, south Jersey sisters—one of whom is a magician who disappeared mid-act ten years ago. Montimore tells their story from multiple perspectives and via a variety of media. The pacing is quick—took just a few days for me to burn through this book. Loved it. Oona fans will enjoy this book and I think readers who are drawn to Taylor Jenkins Reid novels will love Acts of Violet. I plan to also listen to the audiobook—I hear the production value is next level!
4.0 out of 5 stars Whatever happened to Violet Volk?

When I read the premise for Acts of Violet I was immediately drawn in!
Nearly 10 years have passed since Violet Volk, world famous magician, disappeared during one of her acts. Social media has kept the search for her alive (she has a hashtag) and the rise in true crime podcasts only further fuels the interest in what happened to Violet Volk. As the anniversary of her disappearance approaches, it seems different this time. Maybe Violet really is still out there.
Acts of Violet didn’t immediately grab me, but once it did I finished the second half in two sittings. The different ways the story unfolds – Sasha’s POV, the emails between different characters, the podcast transcripts – were original and kept the story moving at a nice pace. This was Violet’s story, but most of it was told in the aftermath of her disappearance. We saw how her actions in life effected those closest to her and how they lived in her shadow even after her disappearance, but I wish we had been able to hear more from her. Violet remains almost as mysterious at the end of this book as at the beginning. I do feel like the story wrapped up nicely, but I had so many questions at the end. I will definitely be checking out more from this author in the future.
