The opening chapters of Liars of Light gave a very promising storyline as the protagonists are to journey from the comfort of their royal kingdom to find the disappearance of a missing comrade. The book has you traveling through various cities and towns with the map serving as a helpful guide. The female lead, Nora, is headstrong and speaks her mind very openly. Her sidekick, August, is the laid back version of her, but both are equally argumentative. I can tell that Camm had a great time writing their witty and sarcastic banter; their relationship is definitely love/hate. However, as the story progressed further, I felt that their constant banter and arguing got in the way of me actually enjoying the story. After awhile, it kind of dragged on a bit too long and I felt I was reading a YA drama.
Nora is described to be twenty years old, and her behavior and actions are both mature and childish at times (I suppose that’s pretty accurate for a young 20 year old). Although Nora wasn’t my favorite, I did enjoy the secondary heroine, Evelyn. Evelyn composes herself to be more mature (perhaps more to my taste), and I felt I was able to sympathize for her more.
The middle chunk of the story felt a little flatlined to me, and I’m not sure if it was the day-to-day activities being described, all to solve a symbolic clue. I was also confused about the world. Certain settings were described to have very fantasy-like qualities that one would imagine in a medieval sort of setting. But then, the setting would switch to modern day cafes and morgues, and I was left scratching my head, wondering if I had been envisioning this world all wrong. The good news is that the ending was decent! If not for that, I think I would have shelved the book for a rainy day. Overall, my only wish is that I would have enjoyed it more.

Liars and Light is the first book in an all-new, new adult high-fantasy series called The Valmenessian Chronicles. This book had me hooked from page one and I just couldn’t get enough of it. The worldbuilding is so amazingly written and kinda scattered throughout the whole book that I had no trouble imagining everything pretty vividly. The worldbuilding was not the only thing that impressed me in this book. The plot of this book follows not one but two main characters, whose stories soon become intertwined with one another. Both Nora and Evelyn are strong heroines. While Nora works for the king, Evelyn is a healer.
I loved seeing the kingdom from different perspectives and the writer’s words had a nice flow to them. There were twists and turns throughout the whole book that just keep you wanting more. I can’t wait to see what’s in store for these characters next.

Liars and Light is the tale of a girl who has never had to, nor been able to, question her orders from the king. Part of an elite group of guards, Nora is tasked with recovering one of their members. After uncovering a rebellion, she is forced face-to-face with the consequences of her king’s decrees.
The world itself is built well – variances of magical races, decent explanation of Nora’s role in her kingdom, good visual descriptors of both characters and places. However, it doesn’t feel like there’s enough emotional conflict for Nora throughout. There’s definitely elements in place to give her that conflict, but I just wish the author had done more with it. Nora is a little too bland – like there’s no underlying personal trauma to give her a bit of an edge. I received an advance copy for free and am leaving this review voluntarily.
