Weather Girl Summary

Ari Abrams has always been fascinated by the weather, and she loves almost everything about her job as a TV meteorologist. Her boss, legendary Seattle weatherwoman Torrance Hale, is too distracted by her tempestuous relationship with her ex-husband, the station’s news director, to give Ari the mentorship she wants. Ari, who runs on sunshine and optimism, is at her wits’ end. The only person who seems to understand how she feels is sweet but reserved sports reporter Russell Barringer.

In the aftermath of a disastrous holiday party, Ari and Russell decide to team up to solve their bosses’ relationship issues. Between secret gifts and double dates, they start nudging their bosses back together. But their well-meaning meddling backfires when the real chemistry builds between Ari and Russell.

Working closely with Russell means allowing him to get to know parts of herself that Ari keeps hidden from everyone. Will he be able to embrace her dark clouds as well as her clear skies?

A TV meteorologist and a sports reporter scheme to reunite their divorced bosses with unforecasted results in this charming romantic comedy from the author of The Ex Talk.

5.0 out of 5 stars You had me at plus size hero!

Honestly you had me a “plus size” hero! I absolutely loved The Ex Talk when I read it last year and I just knew that I would love anything that RLS wrote, so far I am right. I adored this book; I love the premise, and the setting of this book ,(random, but I’m not someone who usually loves nicknames in a book, but I couldn’t help but smile every time Russell called Ari Weather Girl). I absolutely adored Russell and Ari together. I thought it was so nice to see them go from work acquaintances, to friends, then to lovers. I feel like they had so much chemistry; I will say that there were some times when they would hold things back from each other and I just wanted to yell : just tell him/her already and then kiss and be in love”. This book really was slow burn, sweet, steamy goodness, and is one of my favorite’s of the year.

I will say that you shouldn’t let that freaking adorable cover fool you, this book deals with some heavy topics, but IMO I feel like those things were handled with care. However other than the “fat shaming’ Russell describes, I have not dealt with the other triggering topics. If you are someone who finds hard topics (depressing, anxiety, parental abandonment, teenage pregnancy, fat shaming and fat phobia to name a few) difficult to read about than you should seek out reviewers who may go into more details.

This is the perfect book to warm your heart. The main characters, Ari and Russell, are each extremely likable in their own right. Ari is both relatable and feels like the kind of person you want as your bestie. Russell gives off this vibe of the perfect teddy bear of a guy — sweet, kind, and wonderful.

I had a little harder time understanding the character arcs of Torrance and Seth because the reader never really sees beyond the surface, so it’s hard to really get why their characters took the turns they did. But it actually doesn’t matter — you see what Ari sees, and that’s somehow enough.

Ari’s mental health struggles are shared in a way that’s not preachy or condescending (as sometimes books with characters who have mental health issues can be), and it’s not shared in order to “teach” the reader something. It’s shared because she is who she is. And you love her not in spite of it, but because of it. Her mental health struggles don’t define her, but they are part of her. And she grows to accept that, which is a beautiful thing.

However, most importantly, the book was an absolute joy to read. It was one of those books that I simultaneously wanted to know what was ahead and also didn’t want it to end. I’d love to know more about Ari & Russell (and Elodie) and know how they’re doing… because they felt like friends. I felt so happy to be part of their history.

5.0 out of 5 stars Truly stunning book about depression and love.

*SPOILERS BELOW* If I could rate this 10 stars, I would. Ari is a meteorologist at the local TV station in Seattle. Russ is one of the sports guys. Their bosses are divorced and making work a completely toxic environment. One night, Russ and Ari drink too much at a bar and decide to hook their bosses up in order for work to become bearable.

This book RUINED me. It felt so close to home b/c Ari struggles with depression, something she got from her mother, who she resents. Russ is a fat single father, who had a child at 17. He’s insecure but has a heart of gold. Ari totally falls for Russ, and it’s steamy and gentle and wonderful. The big issue is that she’s terrified he’ll leave her when she’s in a depression rut (“Dark Days”) so she ends up breaking this off with him.

BOY-O did this hit for me b/c I’ve felt the exact same way. This book is so kind toward mental illness. I am a Rachel Lynn Solomon fan for life now.

I truly love going into books blindly, but in doing so I was completely caught off guard by this one. Weather Girl by Rachel Lynn Solomon is not a fluffy romance like the cover may lead you to believe.

What do I crave in books, especially in romance novels? Characters that are deep and dimensional; ones with real issues that concern us all. We literally have this in spades with the main characters of Ari Abrams and Russell Barringer. I read that Solomon “writes about imperfect people falling in love” and that describes this story so perfectly.

Back to the shocking realization that looks can be deceiving; in no way was I expecting this book to have an open-door relationship between such innocent looking covers. I cannot express how needed these scenes were to the character development of both Ari and Russell. The way that Russell proves that nice guys CAN finish first – but obviously he wouldn’t, because he respects Ari too damn much, so he will finish second – is next level book-boyfriend material.

Some may consider the rest of what I have to say spoiler-ish, so stop now or proceed with caution – but I have to share what really stands out to me in this book.

I honestly feel anyone can read this book and feel represented. Maybe you’re… Jewish, dealing with you own mental health, dealing with a parent’s mental health, having an astringed relationship with a parent, having feelings of family abandonment, struggling through a tense work situation, not fully comfortable with a new partner (causing a lack of orgasm), disappointed that an idol did not meet your expectations, dating a plus-size partner, a parent of a teen at a young age yourself, figuring out the ropes of your new relationship when there’s a child involved. Maybe you’re… a real-life human reading this novel of Solomon’s; I think you will feel represented.

After reading just one of her books, Rachel Lynn Solomon has now become an auto-buy author for me. And I can’t wait to go back and read some of her back list novels. I’m actually really intrigued to see if she approaches YA with the same diversity – can you imagine reading a novel that feels so real to your life, while you’re in junior high?
