The exciting and touching story of a white girl who grows up on a typical farm in the southern states of the USA and would like to become a writer. She researches the many faceless black helpers in white households who are humiliated and exploited throughout their lives. Although slavery has officially been abolished, it hasn’t improved the situation of young black women much. Apart from the public flogging, everything has actually remained the same. Impressive how some of you are rebelling against their fate – and shameful for a country called the “Land of the Free.”

I have to say at the beginning that unfortunately I haven’t read a book for a very long time. It was always somehow lacking the time, when she was there, you always knew something to use it better for.
I tried other books a few times and I always drifted off after a few minutes of reading, it made me rather nervous to use my time reading these stories.

Then came this book. I started reading it and the first 150 pages went by as though in flight – in one piece. Once you have it in your hand, you won’t put it away so quickly.

The book has a beautiful story, told from the most diverse perspectives of the different characters it is about. The individual stories are, each individually and yet somehow all coherent, heartwarming, comprehensible and captivating at the same time.

For this book, every minute used for reading is worth twice – I would recommend it at any time and probably read it again, if this is also the second thing I usually resist internally.

I had previously seen the film in the ZDF and since the book is usually supposed to be better, I bought the book.
This book has aroused so many different emotions within me that the film could not achieve. I love the character Minny Jackson, this upset and temperamental woman. Especially when you started working at Celia Foote and you actually became friends. Totally great story!
