This book is exactly what I never knew I needed. It fills a niche with age gap that I think is severely lacking. This isn’t a knock on age gap at all…I just wish there were also more like this one out there right now.
Jake and Peyton are this perfect combination of sweet and forbidden. While Peyton may have had a crush on Jake as a teenager, their romance doesn’t begin until much later when they are both adults. Jake doesn’t even recognize her at first, because he previously only knew her as his best friend’s niece, and a lot has changed in the years that have passed. Now that she’s a gorgeous 32 year old, the chemistry they share now can’t be denied as they meet again.
Both Jake and Peyton initially try to fight the sparks between them. Peyton is looking for a fresh start, and upsetting her Uncle Keith who has always been like a surrogate dad is the last thing in the world she wants. Jake is adjusting to being a full time single dad, and getting involved with his son’s guidance counselor who is 14 years younger than him is just asking for trouble. Not to mention what is best friend Keith will think of him falling hard for Keith’s beloved niece. But it doesn’t take long for the sparks to explode, and lead to an epic romance.
I love that while they keep their relationship a secret (at first on purpose, then bad timing), we get to spend so much time with them as a couple. Not only do we get to see the passion that completely engulfs them, we also see them get through daily life and trying times together. We get to see strong, tough Jake’s marshmallow center as both a partner and a parent. We get to see Peyton as a supportive partner, and a strong woman who adores her work and loves with all she has.
This story is filled with scenes that will melt your Kindle as well as scenes that will leave you swooning. It can’t be narrowed down to one trope, because it is just as messy as real life. It is an all encompassing story that will draw you in and refuse to let you go.
I also loved the side characters in this story. Kelly Lakes is such a fun small town filled with nosy neighbors, great friends, and family that loves deep. I would absolutely love to see more of this town and these characters. I know this is a book I will read over and over again.

First, let me say that when you hear age gap, you automatically think of the heroine as being a young 20-ish age and the hero as 30’s or 40’s. In this book, Peyton is 32 and Jake is 46 – that’s my kind of age gap! Peyton was a teenager when she developed a crush on her Uncle Keith’s best friend, but 17 years later, she’s all grown up and he’s hotter than ever. When she moves to her Uncle Keith’s town and takes a job as a guidance counselor at Jake’s 14 year old son, Mike’s school, they run into each other in the parking lot of said school and sparks really fly!
I think what I loved most about this book is their understanding that Keith would (somewhat understandably) not like their newfound feelings and that they truly tried to ignore their chemistry and just remain friends. That push/pull and the yearning for each other was SO swoony. It really built into a deep, intense connection that just couldn’t be ignored. Like we’ve come to expect from Stephanie Rose, their love just will NOT go quietly into the night! Before long, they’re faced with some difficult decisions and I can honestly say it was a joy reading their story. When an author takes you away and you feel like you’re actually ‘seeing’ these people in your head, I consider it a GREAT book.
I was also touched by the relationship between Jake and his son, Mike, and the one that Peyton developed with Mike. She truly became a champion of his even before she and Jake embarked on their romance. Mike was dealing with a new school, a new home and having been “dumped” with his dad by his mom. It was a lot for a 14 year old to cope with and the way his story unfolded was masterful.
I think Stephanie Rose is hitting her stride, each book is better and better and I for one cannot WAIT for whatever she dreams up next! In the meantime, you’ll definitely want to read An Unexpected Turn! It’s funny, romantic and an overall fabulous story – one click this one for sure and you can thank me later!

Stephanie Rose is a fairly recent find for me. Her work was recommended to me by a fellow reader and I thank my lucky stars that I stumbled upon this treasure.
An Unexpected Turn contains some of my most addictive tropes – forbidden romance/age gap/single dad….
Peyton feels the need to flee the big city where she was lied to and betrayed by someone she thought she loved and respected. Her naivety not only broke her heart, her trust but also cost her the job she loved. An opening surfaced for a school counselor in the small town school district where her uncle and his family lived. He had been like a father to her and she longed to be somewhere that she felt safe and loved once again.
Jake now had custody of his 14 year old son Mike which is where he always hoped he would be. His terrifying and anxiety riddled divorce had taken it’s toll on both Jake and Mike. He hoped that he could now repair both his relationship with his son as well repair some of the damage his ex-wife had created in Mike’s psyche.
When Jake comes to the school one day to pick up Mike, he feels an instant attraction for the beautiful woman waiting outside with his son. Trouble ensues after this point as these two feel they must fight their attraction due to all the reasons the world placed restrictions on a relationship between them.
I absolutely have fallen head over heals for these characters. One thing that really appeals to me about this story and the author’s writing is that she gives you several epilogues as to were these end up after “The End”. Now the one thing I really need is to see what the future holds for “our Mike”!
