When a pair of moonshiners out on an illicit midnight delivery disappear, no one pays much attention. Until their truck is found abandoned on a lonely back road, and not far away, their mutilated bodies. Stumped, the local police chalk it up to a wild animal.

But the killer isn’t done.

Another attack swiftly follows. A pair of teenagers at a popular swimming hole. But this time there is a survivor, and she tells of a monstrous beast with yellow eyes and sharp teeth. A monster that should not exist.

Now, with the townsfolk up in arms and fearing yet more deadly attacks, Sheriff John Decker must hunt this impossible creature and bring it down before it can kill again. Because if he doesn’t, the next victim might be someone he loves…

If you are a fan of James Rollins, Douglas Preston, Lincoln Child, Steve Alten, or Michael Crichton, you will love the John Decker series.

What Readers are Saying

This was an amazing book, it had something of everything. Romance, suspense, and horror. I loved that the book was written from quite a few people’s perspectives as you got to follow the story a lot better. I could not put it down and would recommend it to anyone looking for a good, but easy read. It flowed beautifully and kept me up till the late hours of the night. I’m just sad it is done, but can’t wait for number two. – Corine, Goodreads Review

Strong really delivers in all the key points in this horror novel. The characters are likable, the creature is wicked, the plot is action-packed and the storyline delivers plenty of suspense. I’m definitely picking up the other books in the series. This is exactly the type of book that hooked me into this genre to begin with. That being said, thank you Anthony Strong for providing me a few serious hours of entertainment?! – Paula Sahraoui, Amazon review

Well-written, more literate than most books in this genre. A spooky atmosphere, a bit of horror laced with mystery, and decently developed characters make this book worth the read. I’ve already ordered the two sequels. Those who enjoy the creepy paranormal should keep an eye on this author; nothing “cozy” about his style! – Kindle Customer, Amazon review

Loved the gritty characters and wild plot. The sheriff is a new type of hero and more realistic than the general law enforcement official. The other characters are interwoven into a rollercoaster plot. – Kindle Customer, Amazon review

This is a really good read from start to finish, if you like a bit of horror combined with an interesting historical legend and a bit of mystery then this is the book for you. – god001, Amazon review

An exciting and fast-paced read! In the best traditions of Stephen King, Dean Koontz, Bentley Little, et al, Anthony M Strong has delivered a rollicking read where alongside a well-told, thrilling story, you get fine characterization which makes you care about the people populating this tale! I would heartily recommend it – I am looking forward to reading more of his work……- F Dalgleish, Amazon review

4.0 out of 5 stars THE STORY IS UNIQUE BUT I CAN BE BETTER . . .

When I first started reading the book, I thought it brought on a lot of promise. I mean I’ve heard of tales of Rougarou from the bayous of Louisiana, and even though they’re tales told by generation to generation, I have not come across too many plotlines using it so I thought it would be very interesting.

I only gave it 4 stars because of several issues.

First, I didn’t feel like the author capitalized on the mystery of the bayou itself. I felt the description is kind of vague and so predictable for anyone who hasn’t lived in the bayou nor see it personally. The author could’ve extracted so much from it. From the steamy, oppressive ambiance of the swamps to the dangers it harbors like gators and snakes, to the eerie sing songs of the crickets and the deep croaking of the frogs at night and even the blood curdling call of the loons. In my opinion if the author explored these things, it could’ve greatly added to the depth of his story and what he’s trying to accomplish which is to put his audience right there in the Louisiana swamps, smelling the fetid water, and keeping all senses alert from all kinds of dangers lurking underwater.

Second, the character development is modicum at best. His characters have awesome potential. Take the sheriff for example. He’s a tortured man for seeing his mother brutally murdered at such a very young age. There’s so many avenues the author could’ve explored to make it more meaty. He could’ve made his character torn — wanting to protect his constituents, but at the same time he came back to hunt the creature that killed his mother to the point where he’s starting to become like his father. The author could’ve given him a darker twist where he’s so close to the edge and about to be sucked in to this infernal obsession of his and use the ending as something of a redemption to pull his character back out. The deputy could’ve been used in a different way — someone that could’ve been a tool for the sheriff to help him gain keep his sanity or perhaps, an old childhood friend of his — someone with the sheriff (as both young boys) who saw what happened to his mother. Nancy’s character could’ve been made with different layers too. If it was for me, I wouldn’t make her like a girl in waiting. The way she’s portrayed seemed like she’s desperate to reclaim an old high school love back. I’d make her a girl who still loved the sheriff but is more bitter because of how the way things ended. I wont make her look like an “easy” bumpkin type. She’s a business woman who paid her dues and earned her stripes. She was an abandoned wife with a kid who, through struggles, managed to keep her diner going. I wouldn’t make her too “city-ish” because that wouldn’t be true to the story, but I will definitely make her character more interesting. I’ll make the sheriff earn back my trust.

Lastly, since Taylor is supposed to be a rebellious child, I’ll make her as such. From how she’s portrayed in the story, she’s acting more like a spoiled princess than anything. I’ll make her someone who follows the goth genre. I’ll give her character a dark twist who believes in the occult and knows a lot about ‘rougarou’, witches, et. al. I’ll make her play the Ouija board. I’ll also give her character a reason to rebel. Perhaps she was abused by her deadbeat father and not knowing any better, thinks her mom allowed it to happen even though mom tried her damnest to stop it. Another thing too, just a typo I think (or perhaps it’s my mistake — I cant recall since I don’t have my kindle here with me right now) when Taylor drove to the station after escaping the monster. Jake’s last name is Barlow. However, in that scene (forgot the chapter), the deputy called him Jake Townsend.

I didn’t want to be too critical and I want to be respectful of the author. However, in my opinion and my opinion only, the author is the ‘god’ in every his/her own fictional story. And I can tell, the author’s intent is to give his audience an entertainment with a different twist. Therefore, he should’ve crafted his characters and breathe life to it as if they’re his own children.

In his defense, I love the fact that the author did not stick to your regular cookie cutter werewolf story. I love the fact that he used LA for his backdrop because it’s not too often the mysteries of Lousiana is mentioned when werewolves are concerned. Overall, I give this book a 4star. It’s unique in it’s approach.
