Artie and the Wolf Moon Summary

“A heartfelt, magical family drama you can really sink your teeth into.” ―Nilah Magruder, M.F.K.

After sneaking out against her mother’s wishes, Artie Irvin spots a massive wolf―then watches it don a bathrobe and transform into her mom. Thrilled to discover she comes from a line of werewolves, Artie asks her mom to share everything―including the story of Artie’s late father. Her mom reluctantly agrees. And to help Artie figure out her own wolflike abilities, her mom recruits some old family friends.

Artie thrives in her new community and even develops a crush on her new friend Maya. But as she learns the history of werewolves and her own parents’ past, she’ll find that wolves aren’t the scariest thing in the woods―vampires are.

As the official family Black Sheep™ and resident Werewolf connoisseur, my sister asked me to help identify child-friendly, positive stories for my niece after she developed an interest in Werewolves (thanks Hotel Transylvania, I appreciate you!). And so began a two-year adventure through the newest Werewolf YA titles and comics…

When I learned about Olivia Stephens’ upcoming title, Artie and the Wolf Moon, in 2020, I immediately pre-ordered the book with anticipatory excitement! And when it arrived at the end of 2021—as we were all fatigued by COVID-19—I was beyond thrilled. From the powerful, family-focused storyline to the beautiful and amazing artwork, the accessible pace and tone of the book is just right on all counts.

I love this title and its message! I love that the book is all about a little girl, her family, her adventures, and her comprehension of the events that unfold. It’s PERFECT for my niece, who’s 8 years old right now. She’s not 100% reading at the level the book is written, so it’s a great activity for her and her parents to do together right now—a few pages of the comic each evening.

Olivia Stephens knocks it out of the park with this title and I can’t wait to see more from her and Artie!
