Why we need to know the purpose of life

Actually, life without a purpose is useless. The truth is that, man was created for a purpose, otherwise, life will be meaningless. It is only when we understand that we are here for a purpose that we will see the need to achieve that purpose, and it is by achieving that purpose that we will attain lofty meaning in life. Take technology as an example, man has created a gamut of technological devices. Each device was created for a purpose. No scientist or engineer spends his/her time and resources working on a device that has no purpose whatsoever. The Airplane was created for a purpose, to move people from one place to another. The cell phone was created for a purpose, to ease make communication between two or more persons who are far from each other easy and simple, and to do other wonderful tasks as we can see today. The internet was created with the purpose of enabling you read this article as you are doing right now, and to do countless number of other things.

Everything that was ever made by man was made for a purpose. Now, if man with all his intelligence and brilliance made everything he made for a purpose, how much more man himself, He must have been made for a purpose.

What is the purpose of life?

Life becomes meaningful and sweet when a man discovers his purpose in life. As a matter of truth, this is the question every human being should ask himself or herself – what is my purpose in life?

Well, to answer this question, we need to go back to the example we gave earlier about man’s invention and creation. If you buy a new device from the market, say, a cell phone. Once you open the phone pack, you will see a book or leaflet. That leaflet or book is called a manual, it is in this book that you will get every information you need to operate your new cell phone. If you really want to enjoy your new cell phone, if you want your new cell phone to last, then, you have to adhere to all the information and instruction given in the manual. The manual will tell you what the cell phone will do, which is its purpose and how it will do it.

Same thing is applicable to man. Man was created for a purpose; this purpose is his responsibility in life. For man to find out his purpose in life, he has to read the manual of life and the manual of life is the scriptures. Yes, the Bible is the manual of life. In the Hebrew language, the scripture is called the Torah, the Torah simply means, divine instruction for living. It is inside the bible that you will find your purpose in life. It is your duty to search the bible to understand your purpose in life as a human being, or the purpose of man on Earth in general.

Making the world a better place, that’s the purpose of life

To understand the purpose of man, let’s go back to the time of creation. After creating man on the sixth day of creation, God took him to the garden of Eden, an there, God gave him a responsibility, which serves as the basis of man’s purpose in life.

The book of Genesis 1: 28

God blessed them and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, fill the Earth and subdue it: and rule over the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, and every living thing that moves on the earth.”

Genesis 1: 28

After God created man, the statement above was His instruction to man, which serves as the basis of man’s purpose on earth. It is now left for man to interpret this obligation with the wisdom that God has given him and achieve the purpose he is obligated to achieve. From the passage we read earlier, it is no doubt that the purpose of man on earth as God will have it, is to take care of the earth. This goes to mean that, man should endeavor in everything he does, to make the world a better place.

Irrespective of your race, color, religion, etc. this is the only world we have, it is our duty to take care of it, therefore, in any career path you chose, make sure you have this purpose in mind, that is, to make the world a better place, to manage and maintain the world to use all the resources you have to beautify the world. If you have money then use your money in making the world a better place, if you have education and knowledge of science, use it to beautify the world. If you are a leader, use your position to bring peace to the world. When we all combine all our resources together, we can make the world a better place for everyone.

Therefore, to answer the question of what the purpose of man is on earth, the answer is; the purpose of man on earth is to make the world a better place.

The book of Ecclesiastes 12: 13 says:

Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind.

Ecclesiastes 12: 13

This too falls in line with the obligation That God gave to man after He made him. He gave man a commandment to take care of everything on earth. As long as man is doing that in his capacity, he is fulfilling God’s will and that means fearing God.

To fulfil our purpose in life is not difficult, it only requires one thing, and that is – in all you do, do it with the mindset of making the world a better place. Stealing will not make the world a better place, murdering will not make the world a better place, hatred will not make the world a better place, but love will, peace will, kindness will, empathy will.

May we live to fulfil our purpose in life as we make the world a better place for you and me. And may the Almighty God, grant us the ability to accomplish this life mission. Amen.
