Treasure State Book Summary

Private Investigator Cassie Dewell’s business is thriving, and her latest case puts her on the hunt for a slippery con man who’s disappeared somewhere in the “treasure state”. A wealthy Florida widow has accused him of absconding with her fortune, and wants Cassie to find him and get it back. The trail takes Cassie to Anaconda, Montana, a quirky former copper mining town that’s the perfect place to reinvent yourself. As the case develops, Cassie begins to wonder if her client is telling her everything.

On top of that, Cassie is also working what’s easily one of her strangest assignments ever. A poem that promises buried treasure to one lucky adventurer has led to a cutthroat competition and five deaths among treasure-hunters. But Cassie’s client doesn’t want the treasure. Instead, he claims to be the one who hid the gold and wrote the poem. And he’s hired Cassie to try to find him. Between the two cases, Cassie has her hands full.

In Montana, a killer view can mean more than just the scenery, and Cassie knows much darker things hide behind the picturesque landscape of Big Sky Country. Treasure State, C. J. Box’s highly anticipated follow-up to The Bitterroots, is full of more twists and turns than the switchbacks through the Anaconda Range.

5.0 out of 5 stars As usual, a great read, but much too short.

CJ box is a wonder at creating believable and empathetic characters that draw you in and make you want to share in their triumphs and their losses. Cassie Dewell is one of those characters. This book, like all of Box’s books, draws you in immediately and keeps you there, turning page after page, until it last you read the last page. The only problem with CJ and this is also true of his later Joe Pickett books, is that they’re hardly ever more than 300 pages long, usually more like 275. Come on CJ, can you just add another five or six chapters and make the thing a little longer so we can enjoy it that much more.
Notwithstanding, he’s a master of the human psyche, and Cassie is not only believable, but also tragically funny. She struggles with her weight, is guilty about a lot of things that plague women, and struggles to take care of her son, who is hitting adolescence with a vengeance. His bad guys are really really bad guys, and, without giving away too much, one of the bad guys in this book actually tickles her fancy.
To this readers delight, he also brought in one of the characters from his Joe Pickett novels. I won’t tell you which one, but the fit is perfect.
So, CJ, spend little more time writing and the delighting all of us with your plot and characters.

Cassie Dewell is a likable private investigator. She’s a bit overweight and susceptible to snacks and fast food. And she’s empathetic and non-threatening — despite the revolver tucked into her cowboy boot and the Glock in her purse. Like all fictional investigators, she’s smart and determined.

Cassie has two major clients in this book. One is a handsome charmer who has tricked a rich woman out of her fortune. The other is a man who has instigated a famous treasure hunt by hiding a chest full of gold — and posting a poem about how to find it. The poet hires Cassie not to find the treasure, but to find him. If she can’t find him, nobody can, and that would please him. Either way, she’ll be paid. This is a very peculiar case.

The plot yields plenty of action. Bullets fly, bodies disappear, and Cassie has narrow escapes. There’s a nightmare of a bad guy, and some especially sympathetic characters as well. I enjoy every visit to Montana in books by C.J. Box. He never disappoints.

I thought Mr. Box was done with Cassie, but am elated to pick up her story thread once again. Ever since CJ Box introduced us to Cody Hoyt in ‘Three Weeks To Say Goodbye’, I’ve loved the Hoyt/Dewell series, though I’ve always felt it was a forgotten step sibling to ‘’Joe Pickett’ (who I also devotedly follow).

An extra added bonus with Cassie’s new novel is the inclusion of intern April Pickett, recently departed from the Pickett household. She is such a fascinating character, with her own spectacularly dramatic backstory, that I was sad to see her depart from Saddlestring, but now I hope she’ll play a prominent role in future Cassie Dewell novels. Treasure State is an enjoyable and entertaining story with a cast of well rendered characters I hope to read about again soon. Oh, and yay Kyle!

I love a story that does not have a “length” in mind at the start. So many 500+ page books today have so much extra information that it’s hard to weed through…. “Is this important?” “Is the author just filling up space?” “Is it necessary to spend four pages describing the sunrise?”
This book has great character development, makes you taste the vileness of the villains, makes your heart ache for the good people, appreciate the heroine’s thought processes and route for the underdogs. There’s no Joe Pickett, but plenty of good reading. Enjoy!
