Touchy Subjects is about things that make people wince: taboos, controversies, secrets and lies. Some of the events that characters crash into are grand, tragic ones: miscarriage, overdose, missing persons, a mother who deserts her children. Other topics, like religion and money, are not inherently taboo, but they can cause acute discomfort because people disagree so vehemently. Many of these stories are about the spectrum of constrained, convoluted feeling that runs from awkwardness through embarrassment to shame.

Of Donoghue’s short story collections to date, I think this is the best. “Touchy Subjects” offers 19 takes on contemporary topics from babies and family life to art, writing, brief encounters – sexual and non-sexual – and death. Some stories are poignant, some are laugh-out-loud funny, one is deliciously erotic, all are thoughtful and entertaining. The diversity of topics and moods is what made this one so satisfying for me.

Among my favorite stories: the title story “Touchy Subjects” involves a male-female rendezvous in a hotel with a surprising twist; “Pluck” reveals how one man reacts to something really annoying about his lover; “The Sanctuary of Hands,” is about a lonely tourist finding unexpected companionship in the caves of southern France; and “Speaking in Tongues” is a hot story about a one night stand told cleverly from the alternating viewpoints of two people in the grips of desire.

“Touchy Subjects” is a great intro to Donoghue in terms of her style and range. Like all her work, it exhibits real depth and understanding of people at the same time that it thoroughly entertains. The writing is simple and clear and should be accessible to all readers. I highly recommend it. Also, it’s a great gift for a loved one’s birthday or the holidays.

If you are looking at this review to consider reading a new author for you, what have you waited for? If you are her to read another Donoghue book, why do you hesitate? Irish born, Canadian Emma Donoghue is simply put, fabulous!! For me she is up there with or above the word smiths like Thomas Sanchez that are not widely known. READ THIS AUTHOR!! TOUCHY SUBJECTS is a collection of short stories, amazing little tales about life and discovery. Start here then maybe HOOD or SLAMMERKIN ( a classic already), or THE ROOM all wonderful books. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
