5.0 out of 5 stars How did a seemingly murdered man end up in a tree?

“What sorrow brought him here? To this tree and to this end?”

A man is found, hanging from a tree, in the woods of Three Pines. The man, Arthur Ellis, was a guest at the local Inn & Spa. Chief Inspector Armand Gamache’s team ultimately learn that this is not the man’s true name. Although the hanging and a note point toward suicide as the cause of death, Gamache is not convinced.

When the man’s real name, and the truth behind the name he has taken is revealed there are more questions than answers. Number one of which is, if he was murdered, how did someone carry a man, especially a dead man, to the top of a tree?

At 100 pages this is a quick read, but equally as enjoyable. The Hangman is intended as a stand alone novella, although it is number 6.5 in the list of books in the series and it has most of the same cast of characters. Penny authored this book for adults who are “emerging readers,” as a part of Canada’s literacy program.

Fun Fact: The three pine trees at the center of Three Pines Village are a part of an old code. “Three pine trees planted together means safety. It was used as a signal centuries ago. It marked a sanctuary.”

I love reading Penny’s Gamache. This was too short and a disappointment because it didn’t build into a good crescendo. I wish I knew what I bought for $2.99, still love Louise.

I was delighted to come across this novella by Louise Penny (one of my new favorite writers!) It’s always nice to travel to Three Pines with Armand Gamache; like going home. Short and puzzling, another search for a murderer – or was it? Another taste of Penny’s good writing from Good Reads series. Canada is lucky to have this writer amidst her others.
