The Moonshiner’s Daughter Pdf is a Historical Fiction novel By Donna Everhart. Set in North Carolina in 1960 and brimming with authenticity and grit, The Moonshiner’s Daughter evokes the singular life of sixteen-year-old Jessie Sasser, a young woman determined to escape her family’s past.
The Moonshiner’s Daughter Summary
Generations of Sassers have made moonshine in the Brushy Mountains of Wilkes County, North Carolina. Their history is recorded in a leather-bound journal that belongs to Jessie Sasser’s daddy, but Jessie wants no part of it. As far as she’s concerned, moonshine caused her mother’s death a dozen years ago.
Her father refuses to speak about her mama, or about the day she died. But Jessie has a gnawing hunger for the truth–one that compels her to seek comfort in food. Yet all her self-destructive behavior seems to do is feed what her school’s gruff but compassionate nurse describes as the “monster” inside Jessie.
Resenting her father’s insistence that moonshining runs in her veins, Jessie makes a plan to destroy the stills, using their neighbors as scapegoats. Instead, her scheme escalates an old rivalry and reveals long-held grudges. As she endeavors to right wrongs old and new, Jessie’s loyalties will bring her to unexpected revelations about her family, her strengths–and a legacy that may provide her with the answers she has been longing for.

Moonshine has often intrigued people, especially those who can not afford expensive liquor. When our granddaughter began her studies at West Virginia University, my husband said, “ Don’t drink any of that moonshine.” That has been a joke within our family for several years. I purchased this novel to give to that WV granddaughter for Christmas and was pleasantly surprised how wonderfully it is written and how intrigued I became with the plot of a family who makes moonshine to increase their family income. The conflict comes when one family member is against making moonshine and when competitive makers of moonshine seek revenge on her and her family. It’s a good read!

The lifestyle of original moonshiners is deeply embedded with history, risk, tragedy’ and tall tales passed on to the next generation. The author weaved a story full of characters as well as legend of moon shining. I found it interesting but yet wishing there was more depth to the story that she was starting to weave. Often the climax of the story was chopped short and left more to be told. The ending was a complete surprise and just abrupt with few details. Maybe the author left room for a follow up book. Overall a decent read.

I read this book in 2 days. I chose it because I love historical fiction. This did not disappoint. I learned a lot about moonshining and the struggles and hardships that come with it. Every character was well developed and every chapter a page turner. I felt so deeply for Jesse and her brother. I thought her eating disorder, always in the background, was a realistic show of true trauma. It was a different time. One worthy of exploring. I like realistic books. Not everything always works out. Sometimes the characters change and grow and there is redemption, and sometimes not. I just love this book. And I read, a lot.

Who knows what fires the demon within her. Is it physical or a spiritual reaction to a loss unforgotten? Her life was a chaotic mess but seen by another as predictable.
