The Long Way Home Book Summary

Happily retired in the village of Three Pines, Armand Gamache, former Chief Inspector of Homicide with the Sûreté du Québec, has found a peace he’d only imagined possible. On warm summer mornings he sits on a bench holding a small book, The Balm in Gilead, in his large hands. “There is a balm in Gilead,” his neighbor Clara Morrow reads from the dust jacket, “to make the wounded whole.”

While Gamache doesn’t talk about his wounds and his balm, Clara tells him about hers. Peter, her artist husband, has failed to come home. Failed to show up as promised on the first anniversary of their separation. She wants Gamache’s help to find him. Having finally found sanctuary, Gamache feels a near revulsion at the thought of leaving Three Pines. “There’s power enough in Heaven,” he finishes the quote as he contemplates the quiet village, “to cure a sin-sick soul.” And then he gets up. And joins her.

Together with his former second-in-command, Jean-Guy Beauvoir, and Myrna Landers, they journey deeper and deeper into Québec. And deeper and deeper into the soul of Peter Morrow. A man so desperate to recapture his fame as an artist, he would sell that soul. And may have. The journey takes them further and further from Three Pines, to the very mouth of the great St. Lawrence river. To an area so desolate, so damned, the first mariners called it the land God gave to Cain. And there they discover the terrible damage done by a sin-sick soul.

But dogs don’t have thoughts about their thoughts nor do they reflect on & relive their past grief, or dread future loss for themselves and their duck friends! Oh, but this:

“Henri returned his gaze to Rosa. Who also adored an elderly woman and was terrified her Ruth would one day vanish, as his Emilie had. And she’d be all alone. Henri stared and stared , hoping Rosa might look at him and realize that even if that happened, the wounded heart would heal…” Seriously?! This goes way beyond sentimental anthropomorphism. I love these books, really, but this is ridiculous.

What a wonderful thing it was to return to Louise Penny and Three Pines! I had been a fan since Still Life and then A Beautiful Mystery left me heartbroken at the fate of the characters that I had followed. So heartbroken and concerned that I left the series for a bit. That was my loss. Louise Penny writes a very fine literary mystery. The early volumes were police procedurals with little touches of the magical and mysterious. Now in this volume, our hero Armand Gamache has retired as chief homicide detective of the Montreal police and retired to Three Pines with his wife Reine Marie so the police procedural aspects of the story are diminished but not absent. Chief Gamache has come to know Three Pines well from previous homicide investigations and they have many friends in the village. The story begins when Clara sits on a bench with Gamache and finally tells him that she is worried about her estranged husband Peter. This is a series that should be read in order or you will not know the characters, the setting or be able to follow the story with the same attachment. Louise Penny has created memorable characters that a reader can care about. The series is set in Canada and setting is an integral part of the story. From the mythical Three Pines to much of Quebec Province and in this book, way East to a small village on the St. Laurence River. The series and this book have many references to art, beauty, and philosophy that I find interesting and enlightening. Her pacing is good, and she does a very good job of creating suspense and tension. Louise Penny is a very skilled writer and there were several places in her book where I had to pause and just appreciate how she had expressed key insights. For example, the passage that ends with “living in the wreckage of her future” and again when talking about jealousy “like drinking acid and expecting the other person to die”. Her books are not formulaic genre junk by any measure. I appreciate the basic decency and kindness of many of the continuing characters which our author creates without being sappy. Ruth is just a wonderful character and her poetry is always entertaining. There is no sex and not much graphic violence even as the characters do battle with evil. Louise Penny’s books have always been a series that we have followed like those by Martin Walker, Paul Doiron, Peter May, Ann Cleeves, Mark Pryor, Elly Griffiths, Jean-Luc Bannalec and few others. My husband has gotten ahead of me on Louise Pryor, but now I have the pleasure of catching up.

There is a strong philosophical heartbeat within this story. That of fear vs. love. We start at the center of Three Pines where the heart in all it’s seasons beats the strongest, in which Peter Morrow flees from his demons. Where we find Clara, his wife, lost, lovesick and alone. Meanwhile Peter has been traced to several European cities searching for his artistic muse. Gamache, Myrna, Jean Guy and Clara set off to find Peter traveling half of the land of Canada, fearing for his life. This book is an adventure, a geographic wonder, a mystery and a romance all brought together by a brilliant author and a formidable editing team. There is also a rhythm of motion and undulating waves that will travel with you in the car, on the trains and planes and on the ship. It is a journey by can take cozy in your armchair in front of your fireplace in any season.
