4.0 out of 5 stars Standalone without one redeeming character, but I loved it!…

I almost passed on this novel after reading some of the negative reviews. I was intrigued by the plot so decided to forego the negativity & take it as my monthly freebie from Amazon. I’m glad I did. It moved along fairly quickly, there were a lot of surprises & plot twists & while I kind of suspected how some things were going to turn out, I wasn’t 100% correct. It was quite fun to see where this novel would go.

There isn’t one redeeming character amongst the four, so I was kind of hoping they’d all get their comeuppance. From the first, I really wanted it to turn out that Cat was the good one but as the story progressed, I realized that wasn’t going to happen. She & her brother-in-law, Tristan, have planned this trip. They’ve never gotten along but it seemed to work out for them to put the trip together. Tristan’s wife, Ginny, is Cat’s sister & she’s vapid & annoying. Cat’s husband, Paul, has a secret hanging over his head that he thinks no one knows about.

The big highlight is for them to go on an outing & although none of them are hikers, they ignore the cautions from the skilled hikers they run across. Leaving their cells behind, Cat’s idea, off they go. Cat isn’t on this trip for fun & games, she has some ulterior motives. Ginny whines about wanting the hot tub & her feet get blisters, & Cat feels dizzy & gets sick, Tristan won’t stop antagonizing Paul & Paul is useless.
Someone is following them; we know it’s the man in the bar who was smitten with Cat. But we don’t know what he has planned.

Ginny is so self-absorbed; all she wants to do is go back to the hotel & jump in the hot tub. Her obnoxious behavior lands her in hot water with Cat & then things start moving along. We find out what Cat has planned & she isn’t the only one holding on to secrets. Confronting Paul with what she’s found out about his workplace drama is one thing we know is supposed to happen. But there’s more…so, so much more & it doesn’t necessarily go to plan.

The story bogs down when the two who survive make it down from the mountain & they’re waiting for someone from the embassy to come. The waiting around in the police station got repetitious & other than taking up words, it didn’t really advance the story. I thought it ran unnecessarily long although perhaps it was to add more drama since we don’t know what’s coming.

There are a lot of plot twists coming one after another, so I had to pay close attention. I loved them! Other than the draggy part at the police station, there was only one other area I didn’t like, as well. I would’ve liked to see the ending fleshed out a bit more. It concluded MOST of the story, but it didn’t tie up all of the loose ends. It made mention of what I wanted to know but then stopped.

I looked up other books by Susi Holliday to see if another novel was planned to carry on this story, but this is a standalone. I really don’t like reading books that are in a series that then requires buying future novels. So, I’m very glad this did end although I wanted a little bit more closure. I think the story & these characters, who I loved to hate, intrigued me enough to keep reading. It has offensive language, sexual situations & violence.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fast-paced read that keeps you guessing, unlikeable characters, underwhelming ending

Talk about twists and turns galore! This was my Kindle FirstReads pick for Sept 2022. Keeps you guessing until the very end.

Two couples go on a hiking trip together – Cat and her husband Paul, and Cat’s younger sister Ginny and her husband Tristan. Four people go up the mountain, but only two come down. At first they blame it on dangers from rock avalanches from the mountain, but soon it’s clear (and it wouldn’t be a good thriller without it) that there’s foul play and all four of them are harboring secrets. POV alternates between the four of them (though Cat seems to be the protagonist), interspersed with short chapters from an unknown male.

Now, the story was done well, especially as the entire story spanned a single weekend. None of the characters were likeable. Now, a character doesn’t have to be likeable for me to enjoy a story, as long as there’s something understandable/redeemable about them. But these characters have no redeeming qualities, as we find out early on and it’s only solidified later. Some more than others. Left me not caring who lived or died. BUT, it worked in the context of this story. We’re left guessing at which man and woman survived (they are unnamed until about 80% in) until the reveal. Some of the twists were predictable. The ending was another big twist, but I wasn’t satisfied at how it ended. It seemed abrupt, even for a thriller.

Otherwise, I enjoyed this a lot. It was a fast-paced read – many chapters but they are all relatively short. Kept me turning the pages, and for someone who’s read a lot of psychological suspense & thrillers!

Two British couples set out on a holiday for a hike in the Swiss Alps. The women are sisters, but they are not on the best of terms, since one of them has basically stolen the other’s half of their deceased parents’ estate. One woman is furious with her husband for having lost his job due to sexual harassment, and she is having an affair. This vacation was planned as an execution, but who is plotting against whom? I don’t want to give spoilers, but things seldom go according to plan, as this hike gets off track due to poor weather, less than accurate understanding of the terrain, cold feet, bad timing, and outside interference. Even when you get to the “end” of the action and think you know what happened, you don’t. Author Susi Holliday saved the biggest surprise for what seemed like it was going to be the denouement. The squabbling between the sisters got a little old, but I recommend this book for its delightful twists and turns.
