The Deal Summary

She’s about to make a deal with the college bad boy…

Hannah Wells has finally found someone who turns her on. But while she might be confident in every other area of her life, she’s carting around a full set of baggage when it comes to sex and seduction. If she wants to get her crush’s attention, she’ll have to step out of her comfort zone and make him take notice… even if it means tutoring the annoying, childish, cocky captain of the hockey team in exchange for a pretend date.

…and it’s going to be oh so good.

All Garrett Graham has ever wanted is to play professional hockey after graduation, but his plummeting GPA is threatening everything he’s worked so hard for. If helping a sarcastic brunette make another guy jealous will help him secure his position on the team, he’s all for it. But when one unexpected kiss leads to the wildest sex of both their lives, it doesn’t take long for Garrett to realize that pretend isn’t going to cut it. Now he just has to convince Hannah that the man she wants looks a lot like him.

Aside from a handful of typos and awkward verbs that didn’t hit the mark with what was going on (i.e., when Hannah accompanied Garrett for Thanksgiving in Boston, and she “dived to (my) feet” — better to use “leaped,” “surged,” or “lurched” which indicates forward to upward momentum whereas “dived” insinuates a downward momentum.

Anyway, I digress — this was an excellent portrayal of two attractive, talented college students, both possessing above-average intelligence and skill in their skills, brought together by Garrett’s tenacious persistence in getting her to tutor him in Ethics after he receives an abysmal “F” on his midterm while she managed an “A -.” Garrett’s ingenuity results in him using her crush on another jock from their class to, whereby he gets tutoring sessions in exchange for letting her be seen with him at football and hockey parties. He manages to parade her on his arm enough where she’s not just noticed and acknowledged by everyone on campus, but also succeeds in capturing the attention of her initial crush while Garrett aces his Ethics midterm. The Deal brought together two enigmatic characters who discover that there is major chemistry between them. They discover their personalities mesh, and that sparks go off when they get close, touch, or kiss. They discover too, that they have no desire to give each other up, and thus, they become the talk of the campus, and each other’s support system.

It’s lovely how Garrett leans on Hannah, and vice versa, and how they sweetly support and ground each other with love, respect and the security in knowing they’re absolutely safe with each other.

First off trigger warnings… since they are going to come up in this review. And frankly I was lucky not to be triggered myself. This review contain spoilers, just so everybody is aware.
Major triggers include:
Past rape
Gaslighting
Child abuse
Domestic abuse
Emotional abuse

So yeah… I really liked this book. I enjoyed Hannah and Garrett as characters they had really strong character voices and I could picture them easily in my head. Hannah is a rape victim who has not really connected with anybody in a sexual way which is incredibly common. It’s nice to see it addressed in a story but not put down on. I even liked that her previous boyfriend wasn’t a complete dick it just didn’t work. Which is sort of spoiler he but also kind of not it’s a refreshing change that I love seeing.

Garrett starts off as a bit of a pushy Alpha, used to getting his own way always sleeping around, but even there his sleeping around wasn’t presented in a negative way it’s simply is who he was. It was a very sex positive book that didn’t shame people who had sex and didn’t show people who didn’t have sex both were considered valid which is honestly the truth. And as the story progresses Garrett started becoming deeper and deeper of a character his drive to succeed at hockey was shown to be a remnant of his past abused by his father which again spoiler but also really an important aspect of his life and something that if you are a survivor of child abuse or emotional abuse you should know going in in case that is a triggering thing.

The sex was well written and I was really pleasantly surprised to see how much consent was going on and how much checking in was going on and that the guy was saying no and setting boundaries and that both the guy in the girl respect each other‘s boundaries. That matters. Frankly I thoroughly enjoyed this book so I’m really happy to give it five stars.

The Deal is the first book in the Off-Campus New Adult contemporary romance series. The book takes place at college and alternates chapters between Hannah and Garrett.

Hannah is a gifted music major who has a crush on a boy in her Ethics class. Garrett is the cocky captain of the hockey team. When playing hockey is in jeopardy because of a failed test Garrett desperately needs a tutor.

The book is much lighter and funnier than I thought that it would be. Even though much of the story is predictable NA I really enjoyed the tone of the book. Both Hannah and Garrett had undergone traumatic events in their lives. But the book, especially in Hannah’s case did not dwell so much on these issues. I liked that even though Hannah had been through something horrible in her past, she had mostly dealt with it before the book started.

I really enjoyed everything about Garrett playing hockey. And I really enjoyed everything about Hannah and her singing, especially everything to do with the music showcase. This book was a quick, enjoyable read. There was only one part of the story that wasn’t resolved enough for me. It had to do with Hannah’s parents situation. I wanted more with Hannah’s parents.

The Deal is a sports-themed college New Adult romance. It is funny and charming and if you enjoy NA then you must read this book.
