I very rarely get so caught up in a book that I read the entire thing in one sitting. But I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN. I was fully engulfed in the story from the very first page. And in the usual Alaina fashion, by the end of chapter 1 she was already mocking other serial killers. Morbid has always been an escape for me, and thanks to Alaina now I have a book I can repeatedly dive into for an escape whenever listening to tales of brutal murder would be deemed inappropriate.

4.0 out of 5 stars A decent, short thriller; not my favorite ending
Reviewed in the United States on September 13, 2022
This is the first book from Alaina Urquhart, an autopsy technician and host of the “Morbid” podcast. The book is divided into two parts, with 35 chapters, and a total of about 242 pages, not including Acknowledgements.
The story is told from two different points of view, as the chapters alternate between the perspective of Jeremy, the killer; and the perspective and Dr. Wren Muller, a forensic pathologist. Right away we are introduced to Jeremy’s cold, calculating, disturbed mindset as he terrorizes his victims. This is contrasted with Wren’s insightful and meticulous expertise, as she pieces together details that others might miss, like she’s in an episode of “CSI”. We go back and forth, seeing both sides of this deadly game, as both characters are determined to reach their goals. About halfway through the book we get an intriguing twist…
This was a pretty decent thriller, especially for a first-time author. Urquhart definitely relies upon her experience as an autopsy technician to add some realistic details and procedural knowledge to the book, even though there did seem to be a few minor inconsistencies here and there. The book is fairly short, and perhaps the story would’ve been a little more compelling if it were longer, because the characters could’ve been given a bit more depth. The ending was certainly not my favorite either, as it seemed very abrupt; almost like there was more written that the author decided to save for the sequel. Still, the story kept my interest enough to read it in one sitting, and I enjoyed most of it (besides the ending). I’d give it a 3.5 / 5, and I hope that Urquhart writes a sequel that ties up some loose ends.
