4.0 out of 5 stars Much better than the last book and the stakes and pacing are much improved.

I was disappointed in the last book in this series so I’m happy to say that this book is back to what I expected from our gang at Slow House. This book starts off very quickly and keeps up a pretty fast pace throughout. We get our usual mix of Slow Horses, Dogs and the politics but this time we get some new players at all those positions. The new characters seem like a better addition than the last round and as always the author is not afraid to take characters out which does keep it interesting. It feels like some reveals here could turn up again, but then I am still waiting to find out what happened to that character in the first book so I could be wrong.

5.0 out of 5 stars A page turner of spook abuses.

Perhaps not as pithy as the first several Mick Herron tomes, but a page turner none the less. The characters are richer with age and more damaged as you would expect spies to be. Jackson Lamb is either a hero or a bastard and you are left wondering.

5.0 out of 5 stars Spy tries to protect his grandfather, a former spy who has Alzheimer’s

When an explosion rocks a London shopping mall during a flash mob scene and kills scores of people, the British intelligence community goes on alert. That is, the Regent’s Park offices of MI5 are alerted, not the paper-pushing misfits called the slow horses led by Jackson Lamb. The slow horses are out of the loop on most significant events affecting national security. This exclusion doesn’t last long.
River Cartwright, one of Lamb’s agents, has an overwhelming personal problem to deal with. His grandfather, David, who raised him and was a former MI5 big shot, is experiencing the mental decline of Alzheimer’s. This is a dangerous dilemma for an organization built on secrets, having an agent unable to control what he says and to whom. Someone is very threatened about what David could reveal. A man who looks like River and says he is River visits David at his home and tries to kill him. Fortunately, David has the mental acuity to recognize a threat and, in defending himself, shoots the man dead.
Little does River know that the attempt on his grandfather’s life has direct ties to the bombing at the mall. River finds out secrets about his family that have him on the run with a false identity and his grandfather hidden away. He encounters an enemy he has never suspected, one with whom he has strong ties.
This is a complex tale with unexpected twists and unrelenting suspense. I enjoy Herron’s dark humor, and this novel has it in abundance. One of my favorite scenes depicts a slow horse agent who talks to herself while she works, sitting with the senile David Cartwright for a few hours. She has forgotten he is in the room and uses an epithet under her breath that triggers Cartwright into revealing information. She has inadvertently stumbled on a code word. It’s scenes like this as well as the brilliant writing that have me reading these books. Like the others in the series, this novel can be read as a standalone and will be appreciated by most suspense and thriller fans.
