Quick Navigation

What is a Meme?

The word was coined by evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins in his 1976 book The Selfish Gene. The book focused on the importance of self-replication in evolution and pointed to the gene as the unit of biological information that is subject to selection pressures. He postulated that perhaps not only biological information undergoes natural selection and that anything that is capable of replicating itself would also be susceptible to selection pressures, like ideas and beliefs. The word “meme” was used to label this type of self-replicating cultural information, and it was derived from the Greek word mimema, which translates to “something imitated”.

The Spread of the Word Meme

With the commercialization of the internet in 1995, modern memes gradually became more strongly associated with internet memes. Internet memes are associated with media, catchphrases, and more general trends that spread throughout various outlets on the World Wide Web like chat clients, blogs, social networking sites, email, forums and image boards. They’re often used to point out how trends online evolve and change over time, creating various new derivatives.

Pablo Escobar Waiting

Pablo Escoba Waiting which also known as Sad Pablo Escobar, is a series of three-panel image macros featuring the character Pablo Escobar from the Netflix series Narcos staring blankly in three different screen-captures from the series. The meme expresses the sadness and boredom associated with anticipation.

On September 2nd, 2016, Netflix released the second season of the series Narcos, a drama series based on the life of infamous cartel leader Pablo Escobar.

The following month, on October 8th, an anonymous Meme Generator published a three-panel template of Escobar waiting with a forlorn look on his face in a field, a kitchen table and an empty pool. Within a year-and-a-half the template (shown below) inspired more than 950 posts.

We shall see plenty memes of Pablo Escobar, but before then let us talk A bit about Pablo Escobar before Pablo Escobar memes.

Who is Pablo Escobar?

Pablo Ecobar was a Colombian drug lord and narcoterrorist who was the founder and sole leader of the Medellín Cartel. Dubbed “the King of Cocaine,” Escobar is the wealthiest criminal in history, having amassed an estimated net worth of US$30 billion by the time of his death—equivalent to $64 billion as of 2021—while his drug cartel monopolized the cocaine trade into the United States in the 1980s and early 1990s.

Born in 1st December 1949 in Rionegro and raised in Medellín, Escobar studied briefly at Universidad Autónoma Latinoamericana of Medellín, but left without graduating; he instead began engaging in criminal activity, selling illegal cigarettes and fake lottery tickets, as well as participating in motor vehicle theft. In the early 1970s, he began to work for various drug smugglers, often kidnapping and holding people for ransom.

In 1976, Escobar founded the Medellín Cartel, which distributed powder cocaine, and established the first smuggling routes into the United States. Escobar’s infiltration into the U.S. created exponential demand for cocaine and by the 1980s it was estimated Escobar led monthly shipments of 70 to 80 tons of cocaine into the country from Colombia. As a result, he quickly became one of the richest people in the world, but constantly battled rival cartels domestically and abroad, leading to massacres and the murders of police officers, judges, locals, and prominent politicians, making Colombia the murder capital of the world. He died in December 2nd 1993 from gunshot wound to his head.
