Ordinary Monsters summary

Charlie Ovid, despite surviving a brutal childhood in Mississippi, doesn’t have a scar on him. His body heals itself, whether he wants it to or not. Marlowe, a foundling from a railway freight car, shines with a strange bluish light. He can melt or mend flesh. When Alice Quicke, a jaded detective with her own troubled past, is recruited to escort them to safety, all three begin a journey into the nature of difference and belonging, and the shadowy edges of the monstrous.

What follows is a story of wonder and betrayal, from the gaslit streets of London, and the wooden theaters of Meiji-era Tokyo, to an eerie estate outside Edinburgh where other children with gifts―like Komako, a witch-child and twister of dust, and Ribs, a girl who cloaks herself in invisibility―are forced to combat the forces that threaten their safety. There, the world of the dead and the world of the living threaten to collide. With this new found family, Komako, Marlowe, Charlie, Ribs, and the rest of the Talents discover the truth about their abilities. And as secrets within the Institute unfurl, a new question arises: What truly defines a monster?

Riveting in its scope, exquisitely written, Ordinary Monsters presents a catastrophic vision of the Victorian world―and of the gifted, broken children who must save it.

5.0 out of 5 stars a book so good you hope they never ruin it with a movie…

When you finish a book at 5:14 in the am…sigh. This is an epic tale of monsters and villains and bravery and talent. It’s a story with many layers. There are children with ‘talents’ they can’t explain. All over the world they are searched for and brought to Cairndale Institute to help them discover how to best use their sometimes unusual gifts. Do not mistake this for an X-men remake. It is so much better. The cast of characters include unlikely adults who do not have particular abilities but do have heart, ambition and sometimes a mean streak a mile long. “I never in my entire life met a person more like a boil on a baker’s red backside than you, Alice Quicke” haha my favorite line from this story.
There are heroes and anti heroes and so much Quality (yes the capitalization is deliberate) in the character development that it will keep you reading until – well…5:14 am

This author can really write! This book is so intriguing that I had a hard time putting it down! The characters are sweet (most of them). The descriptions of London, The Institute , and Scotland in general are satisfactory. But the action! Oh, it was like a movie about Butch and Sundance! The train scene had me on the edge of my seat.
I swear, I don’t get people who see a 600-page book as a problem! We come here to find a good book. 600 pages is a damn good book. Way better than being asked to pay $14.99 for a book under 200 pages. Anyway, this book is a great read. It has it all. Also, it is nothing like Harry Potter, which was another damn good book!

What an excellent, exceptional book. Manages to be almost continuously exciting without feeling contrived. Well written, too. Works as a standalone novel, but also leaves you excited for the next installment without resorting to cliffhangers. Well done! Some (though not most) characters feel a little borrowed, but who cares? It’s a convincing, imaginative, and well-told story, and if some few of the characters seem familiar it doesn’t take anything away from the experience.

If I had one quibble, it’s the propensity of characters to not stay dead, disabled, or otherwise permanently out of the fight. Having a hero or villain whom you had written off as down for the count reemerge at a critical moment can be a fun and unexpected twist, but do it too often and it may become a bit predictable. It also lowers the stakes a bit, for me at least. Overall, one of my favorite books of the year, and one of the very few I’ll 100% reread. Unconditionally recommended.

I really enjoyed this book. I like it when authors take their time telling the story without overly describing. I also enjoy books with different points of view that merge into one at some point. I was enganged throughout and will be reading book 2 for sure. I gave this book 4/5 because action peaked towards the 3/4 mark then descended into a more subdued pace, even though it was leading to a “final battle”. At points the plot seem to run parallel with Harry Potter’s and this made it a bit disappointing (children that fell they are the only ones who can save the world / with adults trying and failing to redirect them or use them to their own agendas; villain being ex student / brilliant and terrible in its power)
