Kitty Underhay is looking forward to a week of long lunches and wedding planning with her husband-to-be, Captain Matthew Bryant. But the plan is derailed when he is called on to collect a former comrade-in-arms, arriving on the 15:50 from Bakerloo. As the train bearing Simon Travers pulls up to the platform, a piercing scream rises over the screech of its brakes. Travers is dead in his seat, a dagger in his heart.

Who gave this defenceless man a one-way ticket to the next life? And why? And could Matt’s close connection put him at risk? Only a few individuals had access to Travers’s compartment, and Kitty must find out which of these seemingly benign passengers is in fact a cross-country killer.

But when Kitty’s prime suspect, the travelling salesman with no merchandise, is found murdered, she is stumped. Until she makes the connection between the two victims and realises that this murderer has an even more deadly destination in mind. Can she stop them before they strike again? Or will Kitty’s own next stop be the graveyard?

Kitty’s fiancé Matt has been asked to host a witness for an upcoming trial because it’s believed he’s in danger. When she drives him to the train station, the guest arrives, but someone has murdered him, and since there is no way to go from one car to another, the suspects are immediately cut down to the passengers in that car. They need to find out who killed him and why. Since Kitty is still “on holiday” from her duties at the Dolphin hotel, she’s able to accompany Matt as he questions the suspects.
In a side thread that’s been woven throughout the series, the man who’s been jailed for the murder of Kitty’s mother is being transferred to another prison, and Kitty has obtained permission to speak to him in an attempt to gain closure. This results in a frightening scene, and it looks like this particular storyline will continue in subsequent books. As with all of the books in this series, this was a well-written mystery.

Again, I can only say how much I love this series. Helena Dixon does such a great job with the creation of the plots. I will admit I am glad we are done with Kitty’s mother’s death. For me this was the least interesting of the plot elements. As to this book, I really thought early on that I knew who the murderer was and felt confident until the end when proven wrong. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.

Kitty’s nemesis Mrs Craven is traveling back to their home town via train when one of the passengers in the first class cabin is knifed to death. The victim just happens to be a witness to a large jewel theft, who happens to be Captain Matthew Bryant, Kitty’s fiance’s houseguest. The houseguest was always traveling with his faithful dog Bertie, who becomes Matthew’s reluctant house guest.

Matthew and Kitty are able to solve the mystery and in the over arching story about the murder of Kitty’s mother, Kitty finally gets closure. This is a great series and well-worth you time if you enjoy cozy mysteries taking place in England between the wars.
