I was drawn into this book from the very first page. Although this book is narrated by a girl in high school, Autumn is still surprisingly insightful and mature even during the times when she’s not making the best decisions. As the story goes on, it feels as if we as readers are growing with Autumn. I was warned that this book was going to break my heart and it truly lived up to that warning but if I could go back and have my heart broken by this book for the first time again, I’d do it with zero hesitation. This is the best book I have read in a long time.

For some reason I thought the first chapter was written from the mother’s perspective and kept waiting for another chapter from her. The narrative was interesting and the characters were believable. When I finished the book I felt very sad and as is my custom got another book. I could not read another book because I was still immersed in and affect by IF HE HAD BEEN WITH ME.

I cannot begin to express my feelings, but I know this book will stick with me forever. There are just things that you know when you find a book and start reading it. You know when you connect with the characters, and the writing is so good you can’t put it down. Readers know when they’ve stumbled upon a book that will crush them when they won’t ever be able to read it for the first time again. That’s this book.
The writing, the plot, the characters it was all five stars for me. I was hooked from the start. The writing transported me and became an escape, which is what I love about reading. This book made me feel, well, everything. It was phenomenal.

This book was beautifully written and I could not put it down. It’s not my normal read , and I read it on a whim.
This story deals with mental health issues, depression and really has you questioning how I face you grew apart from friends. Autumn and Finny were best friends and Nieghbor’s forever. She drifted apart from him, and I think that’s when she started having mental health issues. Finny was always there for her, waiting. They grew up and moved on with their lives , but in the back of her head “ what if”.
You know how the story is going to end, but you feel the loss just the same. Get your tissues ready.
