Framed Hearts: A Journey of love and self Discovery by Ettron Books

Chapter 5: Staging the Scene

The morning sun streamed through the tall windows of the art studio, casting a warm glow over the room. Emma stood nervously in front of the mirror, adjusting her outfit. Today marked the beginning of her and Liam’s staged relationship, the first act of their elaborate narrative. They had decided to start with something simple: a coffee date at a popular café on campus.

Dressed in a blue sundress that was a departure from her usual attire, Emma felt both excited and apprehensive. She had spent the weekend researching ‘how to act on a first date,’ a notion that seemed both absurd and necessary under the circumstances.

Liam arrived, wearing a smart casual shirt and jeans, a stark contrast to his usual laid-back style. He greeted her with a warm, reassuring smile. “Ready for our debut?” he joked, lightening the mood.

Together, they walked to the café, aware of the camera hidden in Liam’s bag. The idea was to capture candid moments, snapshots that told a story beyond posed smiles and staged affection.

As they sat down, the initial awkwardness was palpable. Emma fiddled with her coffee cup, while Liam adjusted his camera settings. They were both acutely aware of the ‘performance’ they had to put on, yet determined to make it as natural as possible.

“So, Emma Sinclair,” Liam began, breaking the silence. “Tell me something about yourself that’s not in your university file.”

Emma chuckled, the ice beginning to break. “Well, Mr. Hayes, I’m an avid collector of vintage typewriters. I love the sound they make – it’s like music to my words.”

Liam’s interest was genuine, his eyes lighting up. “That’s pretty cool. I’d love to photograph them sometime.”

Their conversation flowed more freely after that, meandering through topics of art, literature, and personal aspirations. Liam’s camera occasionally clicked, capturing moments: Emma’s laughter, the way the light fell on her hair, their hands reaching for the same sugar packet.

As the ‘date’ progressed, Emma found herself forgetting that it was all staged. Liam was easy to talk to, his perspective on life both intriguing and refreshing. She was seeing a side of him that wasn’t visible in the crowded hallways of the university.

By the end of their time at the café, Emma felt a surprising sense of disappointment that it was over. As they stepped outside, Liam turned to her, his expression thoughtful.

“You know, I was nervous about this,” he admitted. “But this was actually… nice. More than just a project.”

Emma nodded in agreement, a smile playing on her lips. “It was. And I think we got some great material for our story.”

As they parted ways, Emma’s mind replayed the morning. This project, she realized, was not just about creating a story for their class. It was also about exploring new facets of themselves, about the unexpected connections and the blurred lines between reality and make-believe.

Unbeknownst to her, this was just the beginning. The journey ahead was filled with surprises and revelations, and Emma was about to discover much more than she had bargained for.
