A Magic Steeped in Poison Summary
“Beautifully written, from the setting to the magic system, A Magic Steeped in Poison is sure to enchant both fantasy lovers. In this novel, the enthusiatic writer Judy I. Lin blends Chinese folklore with a thrilling mystery. It’s the perfect recipe for a page-turner.”
Ning Lamented – I used to look at my hands with pride. Now all I can think is, “These are the hands that buried my mother.”
For Ning, the only thing worse than losing her mother is knowing that it’s her own fault. She was the one who unknowingly brewed the poison tea that killed her―the poison tea that now threatens to also take her sister, Shu.
When Ning hears of a competition to find the kingdom’s greatest shennong-shi―masters of the ancient and magical art of tea-making―she travels to the imperial city to compete. The winner will receive a favor from the princess, which may be Ning’s only chance to save her sister’s life.
But between the backstabbing competitors, bloody court politics, and a mysterious (and handsome) boy with a shocking secret, Ning might actually be the one in more danger. “Ning’s unforgettable voice and the lush, atmospheric settings will enchant readers in this high-stakes story of deadly magic

“Blend threads of Chinese and Taiwanese mythology with a generous pinch of courage, a hint of romance, and an underlying note of mystery, then steep in a pot of court intrigue and serve in a bowl of evocative storytelling … Who could resist a fantasy about the magic of tea? In her remarkable debut novel, Judy I. Lin creates a world rich in folkloric magic, in which a young woman must stand up against the machinations of the powerful, centuries of protocol, and her own feelings of guilt in order to save a loved one.” ―Juliet Marillier, award-winning author of the Sevenwaters series

The ending will have readers begging for the sequel.” ―School Library Journal
“Vivid descriptions of foods and scents of tea delight the senses, while cinematic prose captures the beauty of the landscapes … The magic system is unique, and the tea competition, with its well-established importance to the protagonist, adds tension. … This sophisticated fantasy is as refreshing as a freshly brewed pot of tea, and readers will eagerly await the sequel.” ―The Bulletin

I love the feeling of the immediate pull into a new fantasy book. A Magic Steeped in Poison had me hooked from the first few lines and, to be honest, I had been eager to read this book since I first heard about it. I was so glad it did not disappoint! The plot was unique and well-crafted like the perfect cup of tea. The characters were dynamic, and each had their own conflictions and nuances that set them apart from one another. This added intrigue and layers into the story, especially into the competition aspect of the novel. The magical art of tea brewing and the story’s unique lore set it apart from other fantasy stories that might be of a similar fashion, but I was blown away by the beauty of the prose and the well written world of the story. I am on pins and needles for its sequel!

Magic Tea Brewer With A Dash of Chinese Mythology
Reviewed in the United States on April 6, 2022
At first, it took a while before I understood what’s going on. The author places you directly in the world and there isn’t much exposition on what or how everything works (thank goodness), only that the MC “may” have been someone bad? She poisoned her mother and sister, why did she do that?
It isn’t until a few more pages that the reader understands what’s happening. From the first page, there is mystery and action and it’s all very exciting but confusing.
I’m loving Bo/Kang. I wish there was a bit more romance in this book, if not the sequel, they both really have some spark that I wish were explored more (I hope it will be in the second book, or I will be very, very sad).
I also like how descriptive all the foods are, I can picture all of them in real life, and they’re all foods you can eat now too. I also love how the author actually kept the Chinese names of things; it’s a way to learn about Chinese culture and vocabs at the same time.
The world of tea is so interesting and original. There hasn’t been anyone else who writes about this, and the author really makes it a viable and interesting type of magic.
There’s mystery, palace intrigue, politics, hidden secrets, hidden tunnels, hidden identities, prince, princess, loyal bodyguard, assassinations, this book got exciting really fast.
And that ending…. Thank goodness, August 2022 is fast approaching!

Unique magic system mixed into a story filled with interesting characters
Reviewed in the United States on March 31, 2022
Lin creates a world filled to the brim with magic and mystery. Each chapter is like another sip of tea brewed for you by someone else. You get subtle hints throughout the plot, only leading to another sip to try to figure out what this story is truly made of. Ning is a wonderful, strong main character that is a delight to follow through the twists and turns of the Empire’s competition. The side characters hold their own, mixing in humor and hints of found family. The strong connection to Chinese culture welcomes the reader, describing in great detail delicious foods and important traditions. I absolutely cannot believe this is Lin’s debut novel. Her writing is mature and beautiful, leading to many highlights from me as I read in amazement of her talent. I am distraught that I must wait until August 2022 for the second book of the series, but will not-so-patiently wait for, what I know will be, one of my other favorite books of the year. A Magic Steeped in Poison is easily one of my top five of 2022 and I have no doubt it will stay that way forever.

A compelling read

I saw ads for this book on Instagram, noticed a sale on Amazon, but bought for the stunning cover. This book absolutely exceeded my expectations! It pulls you into this world of the Shénnóng-shī which are essentially magic users who practice ancient tea making. The plot sucks you in as you follow Ning, an apprentice who joins a competition in the capital in hopes of saving her sister Su that was poisoned with tainted tea bricks. If this sounds remotely interesting to you give this book a try! It is more than just a pretty cover 😉 I already have book 2 pre-ordered and I can’t wait to see how the story continues!

I read this, seeing it on the YA New York Times list at #1. I wanted to see if it would be something my 12 year old niece, an advanced reader would enjoy. I think it will be a wonderful introduction to the richness of Chinese culture and mythology.

I just finished this book today, and it was truly one of those that you feel a pang of sadness when it ends. i wish I could experience that story again for the first time. I will be eagerly awaiting the next book in this series. The authors words read like a colorful, encapsulating, fresh drink of water.
