Why do Bad Things Happen to Good People?

why do bad things happen to good people

Have you ever asked the question, why do bad things happen to good people? Maybe after seeing how a good person is being treated or after your good was rewarded with evil.

This is the question that most people ask when they seem not to understand the logic behind good people suffering. It pains to see the people you treat goodly returning the good with evil or seeing where a righteous man is treated badly.

Answering the question why bad things happen to good people

Why do bad things happen to good people? Well, there can be two answers, the simple answer and the long answer. The simple answer is; because they are good people. And the long answer – I will give two long answers:

Long answer 1: Because what we see and interpret as bad is not really bad per se. what we perceive as bad most times are blessings and goodness in disguise.

Let me explain better with a common story from the bible. Joseph in the bible was sold into slavery by his brothers even when he did not do anything to them to deserve such a treatment. Joseph was later sold by his buyers to Potiphar. There in the house of Potiphar, Joseph was accused of what he did not do, and was put in prison. Then from prison he rose to become a viceroy. What an amazing story with shades of agony.

Joseph could have seen his plight when his brothers sold him as bad and undeserving. But when he later reconciled with his brothers, he told them not to regret selling him, that it was God’s plan to use him to save the world.

When we do not see the entire picture of an event, it is easy to conclude that what people are passing through is bad, whereas it is good in disguise. The sale of Joseph and his imprisonment were all part of the plan to make him great. Perhaps there were things he needed to learn passing through those pains and sufferings to prepare him for the better days ahead.

So, my brethren, when you pass through pains you think you do not deserve, never worry, it could be God preparing you for the success ahead.

It’s like when a child is taken to the doctor for vaccination. The child cries when his skin is poked with the needle, the child would think he is passing through pains he does not deserve, but the mother knows that, poking her child with the vaccination needle was necessary for the child’s future survival and preservation. Sometimes our sufferings are for our future survival and preservation.

Long answer 2: you need to have some level of higher understanding to grapple with this answer. You need to accept the fact that, life doesn’t end here. Our souls live on and whatever we do here has repercussions on the experiences our souls will get when we die. There are three groups of people when it comes to receiving reward and punishment of our actions on Earth

The first group are those that receive all their rewards for their little good deeds on earth, while their punishment for their evil deeds awaits them after death, this is actually the wicked ones.

The other group are those that receive punishment for their few sins on earth, while their full reward for their godliness awaits them after death. The third group are those that receive both their reward and punishment proportionately as the live and after death.

This can explain to some extent why bad things happen to good people and good things happen to bad people. When the wicked rejoice, they are enjoying the little reward their few godly acts brought them, they do not have any reward for their soul, they have enjoyed it here on earth. When bad things happen to good people, they are passing through the agony of their few mistakes on earth, their reward for being godly and righteous awaits their soul after death. Our lives on earth are just one stage of the journey of our souls.

Bonus answer: Reincarnation! This is a debated topic in religion, to me, it is the quantum theory of physics that must be factored into the equation of life to explain certain mysteries of life. I will write about it in the next article, and how it could explain why bad things happen to good people.
