After reading the previous installment in the Bane Chronicles and being disappointed in it, I was a little wary about purchasing this story. Thankfully, this story was a big improvement over the last one and I think it’s the best story so far.
This story is set in London where Magnus is taking part in the Accords meetings between Shadowhunters and Downworlders. It’s here that Magnus first meets some of the characters seen and mentioned in the Infernal Devices and Mortal Instruments series, such as Edmund Herondale who is the father of William Herondale. While part of the story focuses on Magnus dealing with the one-sided Accords meetings with his usual wit, the other part focuses on how much a person is willing to give up for love. Both parts of the story are balanced and Magnus is portrayed very well here.
My favorite parts of the story were the Accords meetings with the different Downworlders and Shadowhunters. It was fun seeing Magnus interact with some familiar characters, especially since Magnus seemed much more in character this time. The Magnus in this story actually acted and spoke more like the Magnus that I’d read about in the other series he’s been in.
My only complaint isn’t something story related, but has to do with formatting of the story. Some of the letters in the story have been replaced with the phrase “noindent.” This is annoying, but it didn’t really take away from the story for me. Still, it is worth noting and I hope the problem is fixed for other readers.
Overall, if you were only going to read one of the Bane Chronicles stories that have been released so far, I would recommend this one. If you were turned off by the last story, I would say give this story a chance as it is a big improvement over the last one. It’s a well balanced Magnus story with humor, action and love mixed with some sadness.
4.0 out of 5 stars Finally!!

First one in The Bane Chronicles series that I was not able to put it down until I was done! it was a breath of fresh air after the first two very disappointing chronicles… continue carefully as it may be a bit spoilery…
what I loved about this chronicle was that I was able to see Cassie in the writing, Magnus was once again Magnus, funny and witty without falling into the exagerated cheesyness and almost forced comedy, it was just the perfect mix of everyhthing that well always makes him so magnificent.
it was specially interesting to me to be able to see the role older shadowhunters such as Aloysius Starkweather, Granville Fairchild and Josiah Wayland had in the preliminary discussions for the accords. it was also nice to see so many familiar names such as Charlotte Fairchild (as a toddler), Benedict Lightwood (apparently always known for his deviant behavior lol) Silas and his parabatai and Woolsey’s older brother.
My favorite parts were those with Edmund and Camile. I loved Magnus courting Camile and finding out how the ruby necklace made it to her hands and why the necklace has the spell it has. I think that was my very favorite part because it really allows the reader to see that very sensitive and caring side of Magnus that makes him so awesome.
The story behind Edmund Herondale sheds light on how and why Magnus cared so much about helping Will, makes you wonder if he felt obligated because he wasn’t able to help his father over 20 years earlier.
it was a surprise to learn Edmund had been raise by Granville Fairchild knowing now what we know about Will.
Getting to meet Linette and Edmund really lets you see where Will got all his personality traits from.
As always this is one more Herondale boy that has managed to steal my heart and who hates ducks.
Funniest moment? Magnus changing up Morgenstern and Wayland for funny names.
Now after having finished this awesome short story and posted my review I would love some scones! 😉
