The Stars at Noon Pdf Summary
Set in Nicaragua in 1984, The Stars at Noon is a story of passion, fear, and betrayal told in the voice of an American woman whose mission in Central America is as shadowy as her surroundings. Is she a reporter for an American magazine as she sometimes claims, or a contact person for Eyes of Peace? And who is the rough English businessman with whom she becomes involved? As the two foreigners become entangled in increasingly sinister plots, Denis Johnson masterfully dramatizes a powerful vision of spiritual bereavement and corruption

I couldn’t finish it. But I skimmed through all of it, looking for something that would convince me that it was worth reading — which I never found. I bought the Stars at Noon because Denis Johnson is one of my favorite writers. I really liked Already Dead and really, really liked Tree of Smoke. And I liked Angels when I read it several years ago. But this book is about an American woman who has been making money in Nicaragua as a prostitute during the Socialist Regime there (ugh). She’s not too bright, so her “internal world” isn’t very interesting. And what she’s going through in the book isn’t either, because it’s seen through her. I should admit that I’m extremely spoiled (jaded) when it comes to books. I’ve been reading for almost 70 years, and I’ve read almost all the Best Literature, and I can’t read any Bestseller Books (well, maybe John LeCarre, if he still makes Bestseller). So if you’re simply looking for something different about somewhere different, sure, buy it.

I don’t get the bad reviews and the comparisons to Jesus’ Son. Jesus’ Son is a taut and terrific collection of short stories. The Stars at Noon is a poetic and raw love story. I don’t get too hung up on whether or not it’s a novel or a novella. That’s never been a deciding factor in whether or not I love a book. I love the protagonist because she’s so real and unapologetic. I love that some of the lines from this book showed up in Sonic Youth’s “The Sprawl” on “Daydream Nation.” This book makes my list of my ten favorite books of all time.
