The Stand-in Book Summary
Gracie Reed is doing just fine. Sure, she was fired by her overly “friendly” boss, and yes she still hasn’t gotten her mother into the nursing home of their dreams, but she’s healthy, she’s (somewhat) happy, and she’s (mostly) holding it all together.
But when a mysterious SUV pulls up beside her, revealing Chinese cinema’s golden couple Wei Fangli and Sam Yao, Gracie’s world is turned on its head. The famous actress has a proposition: due to their uncanny resemblance, Fangli wants Gracie to be her stand-in. The catch? Gracie will have to be escorted by Sam, the most attractive—and infuriating—man Gracie’s ever met.
If it means getting the money she needs for her mother, Gracie’s in. Soon Gracie moves into a world of luxury she never knew existed. But resisting Sam, and playing the role of an elegant movie star, proves more difficult than she ever imagined—especially when she learns the real reason Fangli so desperately needs her help. In the end all the lists in the world won’t be able to help Gracie keep up this elaborate ruse without losing herself…and her heart.

This book was great to get me out of a book slump from reading too many angsty books. It was fun and lighthearted. However, there were times when I felt like it could’ve gotten deeper. I liked all of the characters and all of the issues it touched on. I just sometimes felt like things were a bit rushed or jumped from issue to issue. I did relate to Gracie’s struggle with not feeling like she fits into either of her cultures which was nice to see in a book. All around though it was a fun romance to read casually. I am looking forward to this authors other books.

Loved the biracial viewpoint and dealing with real life problems. It gave depth to the female lead and made her more relatable. Loved the author’s sense of humor and dialogue between the characters. Loved the Chinese and Korean drama references!
Didn’t like the depiction of casual sex. So many young writers treat sex casually, when it’s something that should be special between a husband and wife.
It’s a lighthearted and funny, yet heartfelt romcom. I just wish she’d had the main leads get married.
5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, light-read, interesting plot

Gracie was super relatable. I can appreciate a good list. Her realizations throughout the book and character growth felt realistic from a high pressured situation. I can also relate to her wanting to speak up and second guessing. Gracie was a multi-faceted character which continued to make this story interesting. The relationship with Sam Yao developed over time and was believable and I liked how the tension in the story was not over dramatized. I was pleasantly surprised by the climax and resulting plot of the story. Which the end was what I expected, but the journey not so much. I always love when one of the authors’ themes are mental health and they make not such a stigmatized topic. Gracie’s mom story was heart breaking. Great read.
