This was SUCH a sweet novella. I’m not sure what I was expecting but it wasn’t what I’ve got hehe Christiana and Stan are an ENDEARING couple. So gentle and sweet. I could imagine them walking the streets holding hands having a quiet conversation like nothing around them really matters. They had each other and they were happy the way they are.
Yet that’s not how we start.. Miss Christiana found herself in a REALLY bad situation being “owned” by Kammy Grizzard who took her debt and made it his own, or rather, made her HIS own expecting her to pay up through working for him – “entertaining” rich men and stealing from them. It’s not something she could EVER imagine herself doing no matter the cost and now that Kammy’s men are in her dressing room she feels it’s all over.. She is more than surprised when two men appear on the doorstep telling Kammy they are paying her debt for her and after Kammy has left, tell her she is basically off the hook and have her life back and she can take it as a birthday present of whatever.. The only thing they suggest is saying her thanks (and nothing more!) to their friend Stan.
Christopher Morrow, or rather, Miss Christiana, is a singer and performer. She loves her job and hopes to become famous for her work and yet she is rather shy and reserved person when she is off stage and also after what she went through with Kammy she isn’t willing to offer her body (and soul) in exchange for anything so she is more than surprised when Stan comes to her dressing room with flowers and literally asks for nothing in return for his help. He did what he could for a person he was enjoying seeing and hearing on stage and she does recognize him as a regular of her performances. In the end they settle on a pint together Christiana dresses “as Chris”. Stan doesn’t seem to mind at all.
Stanislav Kamarzyn is quiet and reserved person himself. He has admired Christiana from afar this whole time and when he heard about Kammy’s punishment for her he simply COULDN’T allow that to happen. He isn’t a guy with means, but he does work sometimes for the “Lilywhite Boys” – Jerry Crozier and Templeton Lane (the MCs in the next two installments) who ARE pretty shady in their business and whole demeanor but for him they are good friends. They have the money and means and they are more than willing to help him especially when they see his interest in Christiana.
There’s a bit more to the story with Kammy making a re-appearance but for me, this book was mostly about the gentle, tender and heartfelt romance between Stan and Christiana. They find their way for their own kind of romance and since it works beautifully for them that’s the most important thing. I would have wished getting more from these two but that being said, I’m happy with what we’ve got. I think these two are going to have a wonderful life together.

“The Rat Catcher’s Daughter,” by KJ Charles, is a charming standalone, complete and delightful though merely a short. Since I rarely enjoy shorts, this is a huge compliment. It’s a pre-cursor to “Any Old Diamonds,” the first novel of her Lilywhite Boys series, which spans the LGBTQ+ spectrum, giving us characters with the backbone and morals to turn convention on its ear.
In this case Ms. Charles pairs Miss Christiana (aka Christopher Murrow, a musical hall singer and female impersonator who is more comfortable as female than in the male clothes she must don for safety) with the Lilywhite Boys’ fence, Stan. Stan, who is taken by the beautiful entertainer, is a mousy Polish man who supports a family of siblings in the mother country. He’d rather be a watchmaker.
The story starts when Miss Christiana is threated by Kammy, a gang leader who has “bought” Christina’s debt. To pay it back, she is expected to bed and steal from a mark. Like Stan, Miss Christiana is asexual, and has never engaged in theft. When she is unable to follow through, Kammy is about to disfigure her when the Lilywhites come to her rescue on behalf of Stan. Unfortunately, as Kammy pushes to build his territory, he also wants a piece of Stan.
How will the Lillywhites save the day? How will two cautious, previously burned men come together in an era when mores are everything? As always, Ms. Charles sparkling language, exciting plot, and endearing characters grabbed me from the first to last word. At under a dollar, what are you waiting for? Vintage Kj Charles at her best is a real steal!

5.0 out of 5 stars Not essential to the main series, but also not to be missed

One of my favorite things about K.J. Charles’ writing is how she weaves together emotion, intrigue, and suspense. Another of my favorite things is how she inserts non-straight and nonbinary characters without unnecessary fanfare into historical fiction that too often lacks such representation as it it never existed before the twentieth century. In combination, she is an author whose new releases always go instantly to the top of my “to be read” pile, and this story once again proves this to always be the correct decision.
It may be a novella, but Christiana and Stan’s relationship develops naturally and to good effect. It doesn’t feel rushed, and it also doesn’t leave me wanting more. This story is not a necessary read for the Lilywhite Boys series, but it’s lovely background detail that fleshes out the world. Fans of K.J. Charles should not miss this story, and it would also serve as a short and sweet introduction to this author’s excellent writing and storytelling.

THE RAT-CATCHER’S DAUGHTER is a fabulous short story. I found the book description intriguing and my inquisitiveness was richly rewarded. In 59 pages, you get a captivating story, awesome characters, a most unusual romance, and some action. KJ Charles is an outstanding writer, with an extraordinary grasp of the late Victorian era; her prose is sublime, and the dialogues inspired. I had never read that sort of story before nor the types of characters, and it was wonderful. I also got the impression of a much longer story because not a word was wasted, and every sentence had a purpose.
If you’re open-minded and enjoy stellar writing; if you’re looking for a historical romance that features unusual and very complex characters; if you crave something that is unique, different, and amazing THE RAT-CATCHER’S DAUGHTER is just the book for you.
