The thing I enjoyed the most about this novel was the detail learned about medicine of that era in NYC, as well as the general conditions of living there at that time. The author must have done some exhaustive research to be able to describe nursing duties, doctors’ practices and hospital conditions so vividly. Makes the reader blanch at times, so perhaps not for all readers. The tale itself I thought was predictable; I knew who the killer was long before that person was revealed. Also, there are phrases over used and a few situations that seemed unlikely to have happened, but those were not bothersome. Would have given this a 5-star if not for the obvious identification of the killer.

I liked the book okay, but if I had read ALL the reviews first, I wouldn’t have needed to even read the book. Too many of the reviews tell the story, even down to who the murderer was. All we need is a short review, and not all the contents. After that being said…if you like historical mystery, you might enjoy this book.

Ever look at how many pages are left in a book and think “oh wow I’m almost to the end ! I can’t stop now!” Or do you think “oh no! It’s almost over! I’m not ready to say goodbye!” ? The latter was true for me with The Nurses Secret by Amanda Skenandore. WOW! My favorite genre historical fiction involving nurses and nurse training…. This will be one of my all time favorite books forever! Thank you Amanda Skenandore.! Definitely one of my favorite authors, Amanda is not only an author but her day job is she’s a real working RN! I’ve loved all her books and recommend them highly. This book finds Una, a young strong woman trying to survive during the Gilded Age in NYC. Una is alone which is a dangerous spot to be in with no money and no family to help. A chance to go to Bellevue Hospital for nurses training means safety, warmth, food etc. The special “calling” to be a nurse comes to her much later. I especially loved when Una worked in what would now be the Emergency Room. Those early days were filthy and gross … (sawdust in the OR floor to absorb blood). Even in my career there have been so many changes (wearing gloves and PPE). So many differences and yet so many things remain the same.. ie heirarchy of staff , physicians attitudes towards nurses and experienced nurses toward their own younglings to name a few. There’s murder, suspense and so much more in this novel. It has kept me up two night reading into the wee hours.
