5.0 out of 5 stars Thrilling, absorbing and disturbing

The Nature of the Beast: A Chief Inspector Gamache Novel was enthusiastically recommended to me. I had not heard of the series or author before. I owe the person who recommended it a coffee, or apple cider and pastry. I thought the book was a fantastic read, and have started singing its praises to others.
A young boy, prone to telling fantastical tales, runs into the bistro shouting that he has found in the forest a gun as big as a house, with a monster watching over it. The next day, the boy’s body is found in a ravine with his bike nearby. It looks as though he lost control, fell and his head hit a rock as he landed, killing him.
Former Chief Inspector Gamache figures out that the boy has, in fact, been murdered. They find the big gun, and the monster, the Whore of Babylon, etched into it. There are investigations that include another murder, an unperformed play, artists, poets with ducks, intelligence agents and a jailed serial killer, amongst a plethora of other leads and factors to consider.
The writing and characterizations keep you reading until all hours. There are hints and clues and false steps and surprising detours. I enthusiastically recommend this book. Five stars.

This series never disappoints and this was no exception. Although the characters are basically the same, the plot is always unique. Good vs evil in different circumstances. But they are so intense that I have to take a break between.

Louise Penny does it again in her 11th Inspector Gamache murder mystery novel. The novels are largely set in the isolated town of Three Pines in Quebec near the Vermont border. In this novel we see Inspector Gamache and his wife enjoying an early retirement from the Surete de Quebec detective agency. However, the strange death of nine year old Laurent Lepage inducves Gamache to join forces with his former officers in solving the. The complex story involves espionage, the sale of nuclear weapons and another unexpected murder. The book of Revelation and the world of international terrorism comes into play as does a horrible crime committed by American troops thirty years before the novel begins. A play written by a serial killer named Jack Fleming entitled “She Sat Down and Wept” (based on the Israelite psalmist lamenting his people’s fate in exile in Babylon) prove to be a key to understanding the crimes. The book is the best one I have ready by Penny dealing with a tense ending! Favorite denizens of Three Pines such as poet Ruth Zardo and her pet duck Rosa, Myrna the bookstore owner, Olivier and Gabi owners of the bistro in town, Clara Morrow and others make appearances. Penny is an erudite author and her experience as a reporter for the CBN. is made use of as she crafts this excellent novel.
