I stayed up late reading, with just one more chapter turning into many. Julie Abe created a world where magic only enhances in minor ways; with a dash of luck, or courage. It was unlike any other magical book that I’ve read.
I highlighted many passages, either because the imagery was beautiful or because I felt like I was getting recommendations from a friend about the best books, stores and music in the Bay Area. The story revolves around Ellie Kobata and Jack Yasuda who are forced to road trip across California to a magical convention. Imagine the situation stuck in a car with your least favorite person, what could go wrong? What will you learn about someone? The Charmed List blew away my expectations. I look forward to loaning it to friends to hear their thoughts.

This was a really sweet and cute young adult romance. I’m always a sucker for the childhood best friends trope and having that friendship shift to enemies had me turning the pages to find out what went wrong in Ellie and Jack’s relationship. The magical elements were a little confusing at first, but after I got used to the world, they were a fun and creative addition. I also really enjoyed the California setting and it was great to see cities and local establishments highlighted.
The premise of The Charmed List (ex-BFF’s reconnecting/getting a second chance on a road trip) was great, but the pacing overall was on the slower side. Things went into overdrive at the end though, and it made the conclusion feel very rushed – especially after so much build up about why things between Ellie and Jack went south. The ending was very sweet though and left me smiling. A cute and quick read!

The cover is pretty but it was not love at the first sight. I had to read a couple of pages before really like it. It is a cute enemy to lover’s romance with a cute one-bed moment. I really love how this YA was written. It was not childish. I love how they see the magic in the book. They don’t call themselves witches, the magic is more like little charms. No big spell. It was refreshing. One thing, I would have loved maybe a bonus chapter with Jake POV. Despite that, when he will come out, I will definitely buy myself a paperback copy.
