The book recalls the struggles experienced by the breeze family. This allows the book to look at the theme of fortune, and provides entertaining vignettes of how fortune changes. Despite some quite somber moments, I found the book quite an uplifting way of seeing life. O’Neill also writes in his usual style, lovely to read and very relateable. The author also always provides characters which feel grounded, although some do come across as a bit stereotypical.

This is an entertaining short novel about a family trying to muddle through and negotiate everyday life. It is a bit slow at the beginning but once it gets going it is very funny in places. Excellent for a long train journey.
