First, let me say that I loved Dark Lies the Island, Barry’s previous collection, one of those rare books without a dud in the bunch. Chock full of classics, that one. And his first outing, There Are Little Kingdoms, was equally impressive as a debut. That Old Country Music is easily the weakest book of the bunch. Front-loaded with the strongest pieces, all culled from The New Yorker, the book offers some of the most impressive and sublime stories of Barry’s impressive career (he’s also a top-notch novelist and his latest novel is the strongest of the three so far). Then the collection, slim to begin with, swiftly falls apart, its second half full of selections that seem more like half-baked vignettes than fully-realized works. They bleed together (see the continual references to “whitethorn”), of the same melancholy and stylistically daring cloth. They merit reading for the prose alone, but they don’t have the mad occulted power of anything in Dark Lies the Island. I’ll always eagerly buy and read whatever Barry releases—he’s still one of his generation’s best—but this collection needed two or three more strong stories.

I enjoyed reading Kevin Barry’s short story collection titled, That Old Country Music, for two reasons. First, Barry’s prose uses finely crafted language and when there’s dialogue, it always suits the character and situation, thereby bringing the story to life. Second, within the efficient structure of the short story, Barry finds ways to present complex and interesting characters, full of the nuance and inconsistency we find in people we know.
